help- found a stray dog!

Actually, while stray dogs are the council's responsibility, the dog warden can release the dog into the care of the finder - but it does slightly change the requirements/ownership legality. Rather than than the 7 days a dog must "serve" with the dog warden, in the care of the finder it must be held for a minimum of 28 days. Also, with the DW, the ownership of the dog would legally transfer to the council after 7 days and they are free to rehome, put into rescue, or euthanise the dog. With the finder keeping the dog, ownership does not transfer to the finder, and the original owner can come back at any time and dispute ownership (it would be a civil case, i.e. taken to court).

OP, you may want to post on DogLost - http://www.doglost.co.uk/0 -
Is there no local charity that deals with stray dogs? Our local one is Stray Aid. Maybe have a google for something similar near you?
Otherwise I would just advertise lots that you have him, there must be someone out there who wants him back!
Good on you for being such a lovely person to take him home

like the title says, I don't really know what to do. I was taking my dog for a walk when I noticed another dog walking alone. I saw him down 2 streets, and then a park with no one there keeping an eye on him. So, I've brought him home, but now am stumped! I called RSPCA, and they don't deal with it, then local dog catchers (gah, I hope they're not what they were like!) Anyway, have been told I may have to wait up to 7 days for someone to claim the dog!
Hey,
I found a lost old chap yesterday, no collar - he wandered into someone's garden so I knocked on the door to see if they were happy for him to stay there whilst I phoned SSPCA - they couldn't take him because it was the weekend for whatever reason so I phoned 101 and the police came and got him.
Phoned the council kennels this morning to see if he was ok - the police hadn't taken him in (lady said he'd be in now) which she said meant he has been re-united
The police have microchip scanners so maybe try 101?

Wardens will put the dog to sleep in 7 days if its not reclaimed, just to be aware of that. Anytime Ive ever found a stray animal Ive kept it and yes Ive tried to get them scanned to see if they were someones or Ive passed the animal to family to look after
You could try the dogs trust, Id be more inclined to contact them because they dont put healthy animals down, the RSPCA do put some pets to sleep.
That isn't true of all council's. I run the Wardens service for an authority in the midlands and our kennel provider re-homes after the 7 day statutory period. Last financial year only 2 dogs were euthanised and that was on vet advice as they were very poorly.
I am a huge animal lover and the dog warden element of my job is a part I really struggle with.I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.0 -
well, I eventually called the dog warden after they reassured me they don't euthanize. They will keep the dog for 7 days and then rehome him. I would have kept him, but he was really upsetting my dog, he was scent marking everywhere, and crying constantly (quite apart from the other dog continuously humping him!) I'm going to call today to see whether he's been claimed.0

I once found a dog on a lonely rural road on the moors above Halifax. I looked all over but there was no one with her. It is also a spot where dogs are commonly dumped. I took her home and the next day I phoned all the boarding kennels and vets etc. One of them even scanned her for me to see if there was a chip. I couldn't keep her because of work and issues with my existing dog and the dog warden collected her and took her to some local kennels.
A couple of days later I was on my way to work when I stopped and asked a farmer if they knew anyone who had lost a dog. 'Oh it was you was it' she shrieked and 'You owe us £50!'. Turned out it was their dog and they had to pay a release fee to get the dog back! She was still yelling at me when I drove off! A few days later I was driving near the same spot when I met a landrover coming the other way and it drove straight at me - I had to veer off the road to miss it. I didn't realise it was the husband and stopped. I had the window open and he ran back to my car and grabbed my arm and the door, shouting 'Give us £50'! He was a big wild hillbilly looking man (the wife wasn't much better) and it was a lonely spot. I was in shock for a moment then floored the accelerator. He wouldn't let go but eventually the car won and my last view of him was in my rear view mirror - flying through the air and shaking his fist at the same time! When I got home I phoned the police who interviewed me at work the next day and served him with some sort of order. Even the police said the couple were scary!
It was a long while before I went that route again and even now I shudder when I see a blue landrover
I also think twice about picking up stray dogs.
