help- found a stray dog!

like the title says, I don't really know what to do. I was taking my dog for a walk when I noticed another dog walking alone. I saw him down 2 streets, and then a park with no one there keeping an eye on him. So, I've brought him home, but now am stumped! I called RSPCA, and they don't deal with it, then local dog catchers (gah, I hope they're not what they were like!) Anyway, have been told I may have to wait up to 7 days for someone to claim the dog!

If you don't want to keep the dog at home, ring the dog wardens and tell them you want to hand him over. They'll keep him for 7 days to allow his owners to claim him if he has any, they should check him for a microchip too, I take it he doesn't have a collar?0

There was a stray dog around here running about for a couple of days so I rang the RSPCA and they said they couldn't help unless I caught the dog (which you have done - yet they still won't help!)
Do you have a friendly vet you could take him to who could check if he was chipped for you?
If not I think I would be inclined to actually take him to the RSPCA they may be less likely to reject him if you turn up on the doorstep with him.
You have done the right thing to help a dog who might have got himself into trouble, it does seem very unfair that you are now unable to get help.0 -
Wardens will put the dog to sleep in 7 days if its not reclaimed, just to be aware of that. Anytime Ive ever found a stray animal Ive kept it and yes Ive tried to get them scanned to see if they were someones or Ive passed the animal to family to look after
You could try the dogs trust, Id be more inclined to contact them because they dont put healthy animals down, the RSPCA do put some pets to sleep.0 -

I wouldn't have minded keeping him, but he keeps on trying to hump my dog which is causing a lots of arguments as you can imagine! especially as they're both boys. So much for homosexuality being unnatural huh!0 -
I have also said though, if he's not claimed within 7 days, we'll keep him!0

Do vets/PDSA/whatever charge to see if there's a chip in it?0

I'd try the dog warden - the last stray I found I had to keep in the backyard because of mutt being antisocial, and I told them they needed to collect asap because I couldn't possibly keep him. They have a duty to collect, they can't fob you off for 7 days.
As it happens the stray was reclaimed within the hour by the owners whose garden she escaped from 2 streets away.
Does s/he look like a stray, or does it appear well cared for and temporarily missing from home? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Found dogs have to do their time with the dog warden, if they aren't microchipped that's their best chance of being reunited with an owner. I'm sure anybody who's read Sazzy's thread about Ruaridh would want to do their best to make that happen if they could.0 -
I didnt know that, but Id still be wary of handing a stray dog over to a dog warden. I support a charity called safe and sound pound dogs and they try and get dogs who are in kennels to rescue, sadly some of the dogs are out of time and end up being put to sleep.
Its cats Ive found and kept, not dogs, but Ive always tried to get them scanned, some pet owners dont microchip pets, others do and still wont take them back when you find them, my brother took a cat in because we got it scanned and my mum went to their door and they said it wasnt their cat when everything pointed to it being theres/0 -
I would put a notice in your window, your local shops and on lamp posts near where you found him.
His owners might be walking the streets looking for him oblivious to the fact that he's cosy in your house.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
