I've been living in SE London for some years now and love it here.

If you don't mind walking (or taking the central line) from Bank, you could look for somewhere on the DLR. Greenwich is nice but pricey; the area between Blackheath and Lewisham is worth a look (the niceness of Blackheath with the transport links of Lewisham) but still not cheap. Deptford is a bit down-at-heel, but might be worth a long term bet.

Another option would be to consider commuting to Shoreditch High Street, which is only a short walk from Liverpool Street. That way you could look at places on the Overground network, for example Brockley, which is a decent area and still comparatively cheap.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

I think if I had my choice of all of London, I'd look at West Hampstead. Plenty to do, great transport links

There's a 2 bed. Personally I think it's nuts spending money on London property prices, but hey. That's more than I spent on my 3 bed house in St Albans, AND I can get to Euston in 35 mins on the train. It is a bit boring here I guess without all the knife crime and whatnot

St Albans is lovely if you're retired and like to watch the British Bakeoff.

^ That's horrible for the money!

I always find these London threads bizarre, but then I don't really 'get' the appeal of some of the edgy/rough areas now getting popular.

    Good point.

It would bother me if I had to pay for my work travel...yes it's full of grannies here, but the schools are good and it's rated as one of the nicest places to live in the uk

There is poverty in every part of London .Very sad to see people knocking Stratford when the place has so much going for it .

To be fair, you can get your choice of kebabs, chips, drugs and prostitutes of all sexes day and night, it's very handy like that.

They're affordable, that's all. I've lived in a few areas which are considered quite rough (in London and elsewhere) and in my experience they're usually nowhere near as bad as people imagine. Where I live, the violence that you do hear about is gang-related and only really takes place between rival gangs. If you're not a member of a gang then it just passes you by - it's like people are living in two completely different worlds.

Of course, often when these areas do become popular, prices rise, they become gentrified the 'rough' areas move elsewhere.

I'm sure St Albans is very nice, in fact I know it is, I've been there several times.

Living in the city has more to offer if you're under 40 and can afford somewhere decent area wise though.
