When does Full Time Education end for CTC purposes?

Wondered if anyone could help please ....

Child age 17 in full time education. Half term 27-31 May 2013

Has been told no need to return to college after half term holiday as all work completed for qualification.

However the child has been told he has to attend a sports event away from college the week after half term 3-7 June 2013
(not sure if this is related to the course/qualification or classed as enrichment - will maybe have to check with college) this will be over 12 hours supervised by the course tutor.

Child then turns 18 and starts work on 10 June.

I think to be safe I would treat leaving date as Friday 24 May ?

Just wondered if anyone knows otherwise as I cant find guidance in the tax credit manual on HMRC website

You get ctc until the end of the school term, so contact the college and ask for their term dates

Ctc stops if your son works over 24hrs. But it he works under 24hrs, then you are still entitled to claim, until the end of term too.

Not true according to my award letter from last year. A child who is in non advanced FE then the CTC ends when the course ends so if it stops at 31st May then that is the end date of the claim. Not the term end date. My daughter's claim will end after her last exams next May. That is when her course will be over as her exams are I May 2014. But if you really need to clarify - ring the Tax credits helpline. But if you want to believe 1st poster then get an overpayment problem.

Thanks for taking time to reply - sadly if it was this easy I would not have posted.

Child is in Full time education at college. Term ends in July but Child does not have to attend after 24 May, apart from the sports week after half term.

    Guidance on HMRC states:

'Full-time' means they're taught or supervised for more than an average of 12 hours a week during term time

As per my original post I understand that he ceases to be taught or supervised in college on 24 May 2013. I am not sure whether half term & sports week which is the week after half term qualifies for CTC. He would be supervised by the course tutor during sports week for more than 12 hours that week, but I don't think sports week is part of his course even though he is required to attend. I think the claim would end on 24 May?

He starts full time employment on 10 June and college have agreed this is fine as he has completed all his course work and has no exams.

Sorry, just to confirm ...as far as I can understand if sports week is not part of the course it cannot be included in the CTC claim?

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tctmanual/TCTM02230.htm

Full-time education is education in pursuit of a course where an average of more than 12 hours per week (term time) is spent on the following:
    • receiving tuition,
    • engaging in practical work,
    • supervised study,
    • taking exams
    Thanks for reading.

Bit of a grey area - you've read the relevant manual pages so can't really help any further. Probably best thing to do is write to TCO explaining circumstances so you get an official answer in writing.

CTC is only paid until the end of August if the child intends to go to uni (assuming they will not be working 24+ hours in between college course ending and starting uni).

Otherwise, CTC stops on the day of the child's final exam/last day of the course (and you need to advise HMRC immediately).

I would echo what Zagfles has said - HMRC can give you the definitive answer on your specific query.

Not necessarily, the rules are slightly different.
