I would imagine there is also some investigation required to determine exactly what constitutes 'pre-packed'.

Yes, I would say that if the OP is really concerned about market stalls "selling fruit and veg in white bowls at a pound a go" they could contact their local Trading Standards who (workload permitting) would no doubt do the investigating.

A brief glance at The Weights and Measures Act 1963 (Cheese, Fish, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, Meat and Poultry) Order 1984 seems to indicate that there are all sorts of detailed rules concerning what kind of fruit & veg can be sold by count, or by bunch, or by whatever, and rules about the permitted weight of containers, and so forth.

But I'm not so sure that I really want to devote a chunk of my life to a detailed analysis of the provisions.:)

Been around for years on our local markets. As long as I feel I'm getting value for my pound can't see a problem with it.

The market here does this too. I prefer it around 5pm though when they merge 2-3 bowls into one box and sell that for £1. :D

I take sealed bowls of salad from Tesco or Asda (or M & S if I am feeling flush) for my lunch on the road, yes £1 a go is expensive compared to doing it all yourself but it's cheaper than buying a sandwich (which is not good for me ) I ususally buy a pack of chicken or ham and some cherry tomatoes to make a healthy lunch with no hassle.

Several stallholders on our local market have been doing this for years. You can see exactly what you are buying and are nearly always good value. Many fruit and veg items are sold by amount/price rather than weight, e.g. 2 cucumbers for £1, melon for £1.50.
