Fruit & veg being sold in bowls these days scam?

I'm very suspicious of the trend for selling fruit and veg in white bowls at a pound a go.
Why is it that everywhere I go, grocers stalls in markets etc seem to be doing away with scales, and are selling items 'by the bowl'?
Is this (as I suspect) a scam to charge more for less? It seems pretty convenient for grocers to sell you something un-weighed.
I'd even suspect this practice falls foul of weights and measures legislation since no weight is ever displayed.
Obviously supermarkets sell items pre packaged but these packs contain the weight and origin of the product.
It's this practice just another rip-off to con consumers? What do you think?

I've never seen a normal greengrocer doing this.
Where I have seen it it has been outside shops that don't sell fruit and vegetables.
Sometimes you can get a bargain, it just depends what they happen to have. Certainly I have seen some of these bowls where I have thought they were actually rather expensive for what they were. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I noticed this for the first time the other day on a market stall in my town. Seems like they need to shell out for a lot of bowls..."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I suppose it's quicker than weighing & maybe people like to select their bowl? I never feel entirely comfortable when I ask for half a pound of something & the stall holder selects the veg/fruit & weighs it for me; I much prefer to choose my own in case any of it is soft etc.
There's a lot more stuff sold in punnets & packets generally, even on stalls. I think it's just quicker & easier. Generally, bowls seem quite cheap but if it seems poor value I don't buy.0 -
If unhappy...dont buy...i guess?0

Everywhere I shop it's self service.
I happened to need something whilst going through a market one day so started to pick what I wanted.
"Oi", shouts the scowling fishwife manning the stall, "we'll do that".
I smiled politely at her, put down what I had picked up, and replied, "Oh no you won't", and departed. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Thank goodness you were here to point that out. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

I agree, rather stupid comment by alias! That's not the point of my post. My point is that this looks like dishonest practice by stall holders.
So somebody overcharges and you state the trite comment not to buy if unhappy??
No, on further consideration, a stupid and idiotic comment indeed!0 -

What I consider no further consideration needed & a stupid and idiotic comment is when someone says the word scam when infact no one is pointing a gun at their head at the time forcing them to buy something!!!0 -
It's not dishonest and it's not a scam. Nowhere is it written that fruit & veg has to be sold by weight.
You can see how much you're getting for your £ compared to how much you get elsewhere bying by weight. Surely you can tell whether or not 8 apples for £1 looks a better deal than £1 a kilo?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
they do this at a lot of places now small stores, markets and have seen it at a local greengrocers too. It is a case if you like what you seem are happy with the price then fine buy, if not do not and go elsewhere, as for it being a where to up prices well I am sure the good folk of mse can carry out a survey or someone can - check weight prices on loose, then weigh bowled goods and work out price per kilo and see any differencesI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
