I would certainly doubt whether the best people to run the country are the people making the most money in the private sector.
Yes, the people we want running the country are those with no idea what it's like to operate in a competitive international environment, who don't understand that complex projects need to deliver rather than be shelved at huge expense after a few years, and who see continually borrowing as a legitimate way to balance the books.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -
It wouldn't, but the point is we need diversity to grow and generate wealth. It is much easier to switch buying from a poor small business to another better small business, than to just have 2 large corporations who are so large they don't care much about individual customers.
It wouldn't work. Most people don't have enough money. Look at all the retailers currently doing well, Primark, Poundland, Aldi for example. What have they all got in common? They're very cheap.
Start ups need to buy stock, they're small, they simply won't be able to offer the same prices as larger business's as they won't be able to match the price.
The cash strapped public won't use them if they are not the cheapest. Also having to shop at many smaller locations will put people off because it will cost a lot of time and to some money if they have to catch more public transport or drive if all the business's they need are not located within the same area.0 -
I think people pay more at Starbucks than a small private cafe?.... Lots of people pay a premium for the cool brand.... Also, there will always be a market for the super cheap, but they are not the only shops doing well.... There is lots of room for small business.... Only if we all ditch the tax dodging internationals....
Stop using Google and call it Internet searching not googling!.... Set your default search engine to Yahoo or Bing... It's a refreshing change.... And will put a dent and Googles spread into a lives and country.... It's almost impossible to boycot Google.... They have andriod, google map, gmail YouTube.... It's a little scary how we now can't live without google! Think about how unhealthy it is.....Peace.0 -
I can remember when Google was a new start-up, welcomed as an ethical alternative to the existing international corporations, like Yahoo. I can't remember when Macdonald's was a single burger bar, or M&S was one man with a tray, but they were once. At what stage do you start to boycott the no-longer-small business?Eco Miser

When they stop paying taxes and start sucking our country dry.... it's all about preventing the drain of cash from our economy, not about the size of business... I'm guessing you can only do that once you are a significant size?
Just please think about what you are doing when using these convenient or cheap or cool services ......Peace.0 -

Oh can't you give it a break. Yes, Google, Starbucks, Amazon are using every trick in the book to avoid taxes. So do Vodafone, BP, BT, Unilever and any other british company you can think of. Xenophobic logic fails again, as usual.
None of the companies listed, nor the sum of them, are "sucking our country dry". What's sucking the country dry are the public sector expenses and mindless wars, the need to shore up quint-essentially british banks with taxpayer's money, and the lack of any manufacturing industry to speak of.
Anyway, none of this has anything whatsoever to do with this thread, which should never have been resurrected in the first instance.0 -
Not sure about Gibraltar's status in EU but exactly the same happens with the countries surrounding Luxembourg. Why would you fill up in Germany when fuel over the border is 30% cheaper? That is all part of the single market so nothing that a finance minister can do about it.
Britain could stop subsidising Gibraltar by paying for its defence, and a lot more besides.
Gibraltarians insist they are self supporting, because they simply ignore all the things Britain pays for. They insist they are British, until it comes to paying British Tax. I lived on the Costas for years and every British person I spoke to about it there wished Britain would give Gibraltar back to the Spanish, but no politician has the courage to do it.“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” --Upton Sinclair0 -

I will, and could you please think about what you're saying? As part of this, give consideration to the fact that only a fraction of what's worth saying is actually worth listening to.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Gibraltar was a major benefit in every conflict waged by sea that we have taken part in since the Spanish gave it us. As a strategic base it remains invaluable and for this reason alone it should be retained.0

Whether the conflicts themselves brought any benefit to people in Britain is another matter.Gibraltar was a major benefit in every conflict waged by sea that we have taken part in since the Spanish gave it us.“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” --Upton Sinclair0
