I currently have a Virgin landline and freeview box but am thinking of switching to BT so that I can get Plusnet Internet which I believe is cheaper than Virgin - will I be able to keep the Virgin TV box or will I have to buy another box to replace it - sorry if this is a dumb question

I'm confused, do you already have a Virgin box or is it a Freeview box?0

The box is leased-it's the property of VM and must be returned once you terminate your contract, along with any other equipment. It won't work anyway-once the contract ends your cable service will be disconnected. You won't get any channels on it-subscription ones or free to air.
You don't need to switch to BT to use Plusnet, you just need a BT-based ADSL line, which Plusnet can provision or reconnect. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Oh I thought I needed to switch to BT - so I can keep my Virgin landline and still have Plusnet ? Yes cliecost my tv box is a Virgin0

No, I said that you need a BT-based line. But that doesn't mean you have to take your line rental from BT. Plusnet can bundle your line rental, calls and broadband if you wish, and reprovision your ADSL line. BT purely provide the Wholesale service to PN.
No, you can't use a VM cable line for any ADSL-based service.
If you want Freeview then you need a Freeview equipped TV, or a Freeview digibox, and (usually) an external aerial. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Basically if your house has only ever had Virgin then it is most likely the new telecom company will have to reconnect you to the network.
If you go with freeview or freesat then you'll need an aerial or dish respectively.0 -
Or even an aerial. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
