Which side of the garden fence is my responsibility

Hi
Fence on both the sides of my garden needs attention. I can fix one on my right is thats the convention. Unfortunately the property on my left is empty and sort of abandoned. If the owner is not interested to fix it what are my options! I dont want to be spending to fix both the side on my own.

Is it the fence looking down the garden or the fence standing in the property looking out that you are responsible for the right side of.0 -
Your deeds should indicate which are your fences. Usually marked with a "T"I am the Cat who walks alone0

umm aren't they the same thing :rotfl:
as fluffy says, but in my experience yours normally is the one on the right as you look at the front of the house/look down the garden/stand inside looking outI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -

No!
Looking down the garden has your right on one side, if you turn around & look out from your property towards the road, then your right is the opposite side;)0 -
This left/right delineation is a myth, the only way to be sure (and even then it may not be clearly shown) is to refer to the deeds and and plans. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

No.
This has got to stop. This stupid urban myth about the fence on the right. It's all bull. The deeds will identify the BOUNDARY you are responsible for, but very rarely will it indicate that there is a requirement to install a fence.
In answer to the OPs question: the person responsible for maintaining the fence is the person that installed it.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
But there is no obligation to maintain a fence, or provide one in the first place. If the OP wants a decent fence on the left, then their only remedy (without the errant LL's agreement) is to provide a fence themselves, entirely inside their boundary.
The only requirement for the LL to maintain or replace a fence would be if it were potentially dangerous, and that would be for the OP to prove in a civil case.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Absolutely true. My "fence" although it's a hedge, is on the left facing down the garden.
Reminds me of the time I had to look in a woman's cellar and asked where the light switch was. "Oh, Don't you know that", she said, "The light switch is ALWAYS on the right, as you go down the stairs" !0 -
