Red router icon when not in use.

On my talktalk D-Link router (DSL-2680) there are four green lights lit normally (five if I connect the ethernet cable, which I don't use normally). On the extreme right, there appears to be a couple of semi-colons which I don't recall ever lighting, but the one next to it, the one which resembles a planet with a ring round it, I now note when my laptop is off, the light turns from green to red. I can't find any explanation for this, do you know of one?. I know that after logging off and removing the power cable, after a while, this "planet" icon will be red.

When there is no internet traffic the router goes to a low power sleep mode.

    hi islandman,

As per penrhyn's post, this just means the internet connection is dormant. If you boot up any device it will prompt it to reconnect and the light will go back to green, flashing to indicate traffic is being transmitted over the connection.

You can prevent this by setting the Idle Time out setting in the router admin panel to 0 (it will be set to 30 as a default to time out after 30 mins of inactivity).

    Regards

Thanks Mark, I won't start doing anything at this stage asI am have medium fibre optic on the 24th May. Coincidently, when I was talking to TT I asked if it would be BT openreach coming and was told no, it would be one of our's (TT), yet elsewhere, folk do say openreach are involved. Can you elaborate please?

No. mind you it has been a nightmare making calls to TT.

I rang originally to reduce my monthly outlay and enquire about fibre for a fiver. Language and time delay resulted in a frustrating 57 mins.

When I called back to establish something, I discovered I had been put on a much higher cost tariff, this resulted in my asking to liaise with a supervisor. We reached what I thought was satisfaction. A few days later, as a result of me posting on the TT forum and spending ages talking to an OCE, who maintained my tariff had NOT been changed, I received a call from the loyalty team who confirmed I was destined to pay MORE.

I am waiting for the router to arrive.
    The engineer on the 24th
Loyalty team to call on 25th to spend time resolving the tariff issue.

Although they said I would have free installation as per posts I made last week, I wouldn't count on them doing that. So when you ask are they.............................lord above knows.

The ONLY people who install FTTC connections are BT Openreach. TT telephone customer services don't know their butts from their elbows. ;)
