People don't service down to component level anymore, I bet half of them couldn't nowadays.

A lot of modern PCB's are not repairable without special test rigs, it is often cheaper to replace rather than repair, it can cost more in time trying to locate a fault than just doing a straight exchange.

I was watching heores last nite and all of a sudden my tv went a bit strange the top and the bottom of the picture started coming together and all i had left was a line through the middle of the tv.
Any ideas how to fix this??

Ignore all the comments about a faulty tube and not worth fixing it.

as cheghead says it is frame collapse lots of things could cause this fault dry joint transistor q602 frame chip resistor. I would be looking at about £60 for repair.

    I agree with ravi1626.

The most likely failure is the transistor located at position Q602, or at the very least a dry joint associated with it or its neighbouring components, especialy the resistor.

Probably cost under £5 for parts and less than half an hour of a decent TV repair man's time. May cost as little as £30 all in if you take the TV to and from the repair shop.

As for scrapping it ? A 32 inch Widescreen (100Hz refresh ???) and a built in Digital Freeview decoder ? Get it FIXED !

IF you don't want to, if you live within 50 miles of where I live, just let me know.
I'll collect it and fix it myself !!!!!

Not a single person posted it wasn't worth fixing. Only that it may not be worth fixing if it is the tube that's the problem. By all means have it looked at, nobody on this board can really diagnose the exact problem, only the repair person who is called out to actually look at it.

As cajef says locating the fault in the vertical deflection yoke could be a lot more time consuming than half an hour unless the repair man was working on a fixed fee which I doubt or it was a very obvious faulty resistor, IC or capacitor. Best to get an estimate and if it is a significant proportion of the value of the tv then it isn't worth fixing.

The symptoms sound a bit like the tube is going ........... costly to repair ............more cost effective just to buy a new tv.

Sorry to disagree but that's what was posted and basically states exactly that. It is NOT the TUBE so it IS worth fixing.

Yes but transistor Q602 is a common failure for exactly this fault on this particular model and any decent TV repair man will know with 99% certainty before he takes the back off !

But you've conveniently ignored all my qualifiers. "Sounds a bit like", "may", "if". Hardly definitive statements on my part. I only stated it would be prohibitively expensive IF it was the tube. If you misread my post then I apologise for not making it clearer but I certainly put enough qualifiers in them.

I'm sure I'm wrong, I just said what I thought was possibly the problem and the consequences if it was that problem. But it seems qualifiers don't count for anything these days, so fine I made what could be taken to be a factual statement which is incorrect. Happy?

I was never unhappy, but the original post was asking for a TV expert, hardly a response of one, especially any suggestion of the tube for the fault described.

I never claimed to be an expert which was WHY I added the qualifiers. You added your "diagnosis" but had no need to infer I shouldn't have posted anything at all. Unless of course I need to submit my qualifications and have a career related to the OP before I'm allowed to post anything. If people only got responses on here from so called "experts" they may never get any response at all. I believe some of us are allowed to give our opinions, which I duly did and in no way did I make it a factual statement.
Have I actually disagreed with your statement that it isn't the tube?
Have I already said that "I'm probably wrong"?

All you needed to do was to say "I disagree with the earlier posts because... and I think it is actually...because..." and not be so disdainful of other people's posts who were only trying to be helpful, which I thought (or have I misunderstood) was the ethos of this forum.
