Suspect the tube may be on the way out or the power supply to the tube.
If it were mine i would think seriously about replacing it as i doubt when it fails completely it would be worth fixing.

If your happy with a bog standard tv the local papers are normally full of these as people buy the latest type and want rid of the old

Aah, a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube). The symptoms sound a bit like the tube is going in the tv. If it isn't under warranty it could be quite costly to repair (essentially the main guts of the tv would need replacing) and more cost effective just to buy a new tv. Although before that is it definitely an artifact of the TV, have you tried playing a video/dvd etc and seeing if the tv is still having the problem?

In the meantime have a look on ebay or the local classifieds, there are lots of good quality CRTs being flogged off as people upgrade. I recently picked up a very nice JVC 32" widescreen for £50 from a colleague who has just bought a 42" Plasma.

When he watches football on the new telly he finds the grass is pixellated and smeary, it isn't on the CRT I bought off him but he's happy with £1000 or so he spent to 'upgrade'!
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Common cause of this fault is a resistor gone high resistance or open circuit in the frame circuit.

Resistors cost a few pence, any TV repair workshop should be able to give you an estimate for repair.

Commonly known as 'frame collapse'. Should be staight forward to repair by any competent TV engineer at a reasonable cost!

as cheghead says it is frame collapse lots of things could cause this fault dry joint transistor q602 frame chip resistor. I would be looking at about £60 for repair.
  • As above, its the frame scan, NOT the tube, its an electronic problem, cheap resistor or transistor repair.

But try finding a REAL TV repair shop these days, everyone just throws stuff away and buys a new one!

I work offshore with ££million equipment, and its still change a board out or a box out. No-one repairs stuff anymore :(
