Cheap water butt and stand (Merged Thread)

  • Has anyone got any ideas where i can get a cheap water butt. I cant conect it to a drainpipe but i want it to fill up with the old water from my two big fish tanks which i have to do twice a week rather than chucking it on the lawn, thus building it up for the warmer days. Thanx

  • No, I don't want one of the ones in the thread below! We're getting a greenhouse which will be away from any running water. Therefore, we want to have something fairly large which can harvest the water from the roof (the greenhouse comes with guttering) and be topped up by hose as and when necessary.

It needs to have a stand or something so that I can put a watering can underneath the tap to fill it.

Any ideas for any particularly good ones / ones to avoid?

    TIA

Check the www site of your local water company, they often provide them to local residents at a significant discount
  • Have you found using a water butt easy or otherwise? What have you found to be the good/bad points?

Severn Trent are offering me a 'subsidised' 190 ltr butt at £35 delivered. How does this compare with the shops? Is it not going to take a fairly long time for this to pay for itself in water savings?
  • Hello, Aldi have these on special offer at £18.99, think it might be a bit bigger than this one too, have a look at the Aldi thread here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=771253 Actually if you go to the Aldi website it says 24.99, still a good buy though i think.

£35 isnt exceedingly cheap, does it include a stand and all accessories? In which case its not bad but not cheap lol.

Even if on a meter it would be a while to pay itself back. Most people do it because they want to do it. It does mean in a hosepipe ban or something you can have no guilt. Depending on how much watering you do, 1 butt doesnt last that long. I have 5!! and if it doesnt rain for a week and a bit I have to resort to the tap.

I made mine myself from 2 massive plastic barrels fitted a tap kit to base of them ( a pound in wilkinsons for plastic tap kit), and positioned them directly under drain pipes the pipes were going directly into the barrel - bad move on my behalf because I put them there in october and one days rain filled them and they are massive, then discovered I couldnt get the drainpipe out to put lid on to stop them overflowing so I had to empty some recut my drainpipe and now when they get full the lid twists so the opening beneath the drainpipe closes up

wish I had thought of that in first place lol "doh" but I was very surprised at the amount of water after the rain had stop which continued collecting in the barrels - just from the roof - I use the water in mine for the Glasshouse

I have just fitted my butt to the downspout and after one night it was full. I am considering if I should buy another one or not. On one hand it is not cost effective as we are on a meter, on the other I will be doing my bit for the planet.
