What does Id check/Verification involve when applying for new contracts?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but thought i would give it a shot..

I have recently applied for mobile related contracts (which i have asked about earlier in this forum).
I got (which i thought at the time) rejected for a failed credit check.

I went into a phone store today and asked about it & other products in general. I came across this really nice sales bloke who told me a lot of things.. he said what they do initially is "ID check or ID verification" some might put it. When i heard this i then asked about it and he said he takes my debit card and validate my identification which is what happened few weeks back. But he wouldn't go further and explain what exactly is in the process and what could cause it to fail..

So, i'm wondering what does it involve actually? How they do it? What do they check to verify my identification?

I can't think of any reasons why i would fail an identification checks if that is the case. Everything for me should be recorded with the correct details; credit accounts, living addresses etc...
Although my passport should still show my previous address but people say this doesn't matter much.

Well if you are using identification which shows a previous address and then you give your current address, that's immediately going to cause a problem, I'm not sure who has told you otherwise.

Also, are you on the electoral roll on your current address? That is one of the most basic and important elements to any credit application.

Furthermore - for true identification demonstration, you should bring along 2-3 utility bills or bank statements showing your current address.

I don't think you can use ID showing a different address to that which is being listed as your current address at all... Try again with perhaps a driving license or just SOME ID which shows your current address, and check that you're on the electoral roll.

Credit checks and ID checks are two separate things. The ID check is simply a way of proving who you are. If you've given the right details and know your PIN then that is sufficient for going to the next stage - which is the credit check.

I've doubled check my records. In terms of ID checking; i believe i am on the electoral roll plus all my details are up to date.

However, the only thing i noticed was my existing mobile phone contract still had my previous address on it. I've changed that today.

Also, i still have a home broadband account on my name (but my mum is paying the bills) at my previous address.

Not sure if those affected it.
