Santander Bank Charges

Ive woken up this morning to find that santander have taken 6 x £25 charges from my bank account.
One of these was for £17 something, but the rest were £2/3 each.
Its ridiculous!
How can £150 in charges be justifiable for them effectively lending me £40

I've phoned 3 times and spoken to 3 different people, none of them will even consider refunding those charges.
I cant afford to eat, go to work, or anything without that money.
What am i meant to do?

I'm assuming you used your debit card six times when you were overdrawn and these are paid item fees? In that case, this may be difficult to accept but this is clearly set out in the terms and conditions. See this link for example:
    http://www.santander.co.uk/csgs/Satellite?appID=abbey.internet.Abbeycom&c=Page&cid=1237880423035&leng=en_GB&pagename=Abbeycom%2FPage%2FWC_ACOM_TemplateG

You borrowed their money at an agreed rate, regardless of how much you actually borrowed. If they won't refund the charges then there's not much you can do.

Well, it looks that way, but i shouldnt be able to go overdrawn, if my account is 0 or minus it should get declined?

    Their website says:
On those occasions where you use an Arranged or Unarranged Overdraft of £12 or less, we will ensure you do not incur any Daily Arranged Overdraft Fees, or Daily Unarranged Overdraft Fees and Paid Item Fees when using an Unarranged Overdraft.

We cap the amount of overdraft fees that can be incurred in any monthly statement period. This includes Daily Arranged Overdraft Fees, Daily Unarranged Overdraft Fees, Paid Item Fees and Unpaid Item Fees.

    Whats the cap??!

I don't recall any Santander current account offering that feature. What does your current accounts terms and conditions state?

It also says: Note: If we decide not to make a payment which would take you over your Arranged Overdraft or into an Unarranged Overdraft by £12 or less, an Unpaid Item Fee may still apply.

Where overdraft fees are incurred, we will take them from your account 22 days from the end date of the statement in which they are notified.

As stated on their website: Note 4: A £150 cap on Unarranged Overdraft fees applies for each monthly statement period.[/QUOTE]

As per a debit card with no credit facilities, surely if the balance is 0 then a transaction attempted shouldn't go through?

    Why not?

You've been told repeatedly that they won't refund the charges.

So all you can do is learn from the experience. If you want to.

    Doesn't exist.

If you have a debit card with Santander, you have the ability to request an overdraft. The request is automatic if you attempt to spend more money than you have in your account.

The only lesser account is a basic account and you can only get a cash card with it, so you can't spend in shops, only withdraw from an ATM. This one will deny payment if you don't have sufficient funds, and bounce DDs if you don't have funds. However, you'll still get "Unpaid item fee" if they bounce DDs.

Santander official policy is that if you have not had charges refunded since the 1st November 2011 you are entitled to have ONE STATEMENT PERIOD of unarranged overdraft and unpaid/ paid item fees refunded up to a total of £150 (the maximum charge in any one statement period).

The fact you have spoken to 3 people and they have refused indicates you have had a refund before and would have been told at the time it was a one time offer and you would not get any back again.

Might be worth noting that the 123 account has a maximum limit of £95, whereas the "Everyday Current Account" has a limit of £150.

You will have been told in advance that these charges were to be taken, giving you time to budget for them. You've now learned the hard way banks don't like people who spend the bank's money without prior arrangement.
Perhaps this will be the wake-up call to manage your money better, or at least keep track of what you've spent.
