    No breaking and entering needed.

    The OP told us...

I have sent several emails of complaint but have been told that had we gone up to the hotel door we would have seen a sign with a phone number to call someone to let us in, so it's our fault for not doing that.
Looks like a peaceful method of entry was available, but the OP decided not to even get out of the car to investigate any possibility of gaining entry.

I think you need to be a bit more imaginative.

Hotels don't completely shut down at night. Not in my experience - hence the comment and relevance.

I have no doubt there would be security, night watchman or even a duty manager on call.

Many French hotels or motels do close down at night, and even during part of the day. They have automated card machines outside that issue the keys on entry of the booking code.

If someone was available to let the OP in then the hotel wouldn't have said "nobody would be there".

Maybe not there. But as others have said - there was a phone number to call.

Seems to me to have been pretty obvious.

I would not say standing outside a hotel at 3am and reading a French sign is "pretty obvious".

I would argue that as usual you've made a terrible mistake and are refusing to back down....

That's your problem. You argue too much. Try and chill.

Yep. Deflect. In your situation that sensible.

Don't let the fact you started the argument get in the way ;)

Seems to me to have been pretty obvious.

But the OP has already explained that the arrangement promised had failed, as had subsequent attempts to contact the hotel. Therefore it is quite unreasonable of the hotel to expect the OP to be a mind reader and know they had made a different arrangement. Of course, this is assuming that the hotel DID put that notice up.

The fact that the OP drove past is irrelevant. With the failure of the hotel to confirm the booking/send a receipt/send code/send different entry arrangement the OP could have simply booked a hotel in a different area and never gone near that hotel.

Since no one else seems to have picked up on it, they said a code would be emailed to you, and this was said in an email, so you have a copy of that?

That would be a pretty good defence for not looking for a sign on a door at 3am.

What are the dates of payment in relation to you emailing, having payment taken and the date you wanted to book? Also, have you considered cancelling your card incase any funny business goes on, since they have your details? Maybe get advice on that from your bank as soon as you can.
