Evening all x
DD went to dentist today to have an extraction in preparation for her brace and was very brave but tooth broke apart and they couldn't get the root out so has had to make another appointment at a different dental clinic to get the root out. I didn't think the roots of a baby tooth were usually a big problem, could involve a general anesthetic. I hope this doesn't delay her brace fitting, dentist was a pain to get this appointment with. Should have had an appointment to get this tooth out just after Xmas but even with a hospital letter we had to wait from Jan until now for an appointment and her brace fitting is in 2 weeks.
I was also cross as the dentist just put 2 pieces of paper in front of me and said sign these so that she can have an appointment to have the root taken out at such and such clinic and when I looked at one of them I was signing to say I had been told the risks of general anesthetic which had not even been mentioned. This was brushed off as 'oh they won't accept the referal without it'. I am really not happy with this and am wondering if I should phone the orthodontal department at the hospital to discuss it with them.
DS2 has to have an GA for any dental treatment. He just wouldn't tolerate being awake. He goes to a paediatric dentist at hospital. Last time he had it done we went for his appointment, sorted out what was being done and waited on appointment......6 months later, after getting nowhere on the phone for months. I had to write a letter of complaint to the PCT because we were still waiting and the poor soul was in alot of pain. It turns out the dentist who saw him had moved on and no one knew what happened to the referral.
I have to say once I complained it was sorted out very quickly. They sent a dentist to the house to see him  before booking him in for his op the next week. I got a letter of apology as well and an assurance that it wouldn't happen again. So I would say if you're not happy at least speak to someone about it. They should Definately have explained the anaesthetic to you. Having a GA can be a distressing experience for children.....and parents! I go in with him whilst he's anaesthetised and it reduces me to tearsIf you don't feel happy with things, best to sort it out and put your mind at rest.
