:rotfl: I now have this vision of the TV on castors with a rope to pull it forward from his armchair and a spring at the back to return it.

I would suggest a plasma TV is a positive downgrade to an LCD (even with LEDs). It is subjective to the viewer, but you need to compare only HD channels. Even then, the source material may not have been recorded in HD, the resolution will still be better than SD.
No need to waste money, for a screen that will dry out after 5-6 years anyway. I have LCD's still in service after 10.0 -
Try turning off overscan on the TV (aka enabling 1:1 pixel mapping).
On yours it is done by setting the aspect ratio to Just Scan.0 -

I wondered how long it would be before someone came up with that one - hardly original !
My answer, as always, is NO - I have two seating positions. I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma. From 6ft the HD picture is superb, at that distance SD is grim. At 14ft the SD is very good, HD is a little sharper than SD but not greatly so.
Unfortunately, the wrong viewing distance is the main reason for people saying that there is little, if any, difference between HD & SD TV.
I don't know why so many people have such difficulty with this. To SEE better definition you need to be closer - simple optics/physics. There are thousands of sites on the web that will explain this to you in great detail - but you will need to sit close to your PC to be able to read what it says as most PC screens nowadays are similar definition to your HD TV screen..:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0
