Home insurance claim

Options
I'm hoping to get some advice-

I'm in the middle of an insurance claim due damage at my house. We have agreed most parts but one part is causing disagreement between us and our insurance company.

A large number of windows were damaged. Our insurance company is offering 30k for the repairs. They are basing this on a contractors estimate after viewing the damage.

The company I would like to use ( good reputation for this specialised work, priced for same quality wood and glass etc) are quoting me £60k for the repairs.

Our insurance company won't accept this price.

Where do I go from here? They are saying they won't move on their offer.

Any advice appreciated.

Your claim sounds like one to consider using an assessor to fight your corner.

Quentin- when you say assessor, is this someone I ask the insurance company to arrange?

If an assessor is someone I have to arrange myself- where do I find such a person?

    Thanks

    You appoint your Loss Assessor.

If you have no local recommendation, then google will turn them up.

An Adjuster and Assessor basically do the same job but one is employed by the insurer and the other by the insured. The person that appoints them is the person that pays for them. Evidently for small claims it isnt worth appointing your own assessor but for a larger one with a dispute on settlement it certainly can be cost effective.

That said, have you ensured that you are getting like for like comparison between what their contractors have said need doing and what your guys have said?

Secondly, it could be worth getting a second quote from another reputable local company. I would expect the insurers preferred suppliers to give a reasonable discount to them but not in the region of 50%

I believe the allegation is that they are "tainted" as they also do work for insurance companies.

OTOH, if they're the only company the insurance companies won't touch with a bargepole, maybe there's a reason...

    Thanks all,

Can anyone personally recommend a loss assessor that they have used for a claim?

Why don't you start by getting a 3rd estimate, or get your £60k guy to look at the £30k estimate to see if there is a reason they are so far adrift?

Yes I've done that today- see what my guy says and will go from there. Think the insurance estimate is quoting for cheaper materials than the original windows so that will be one point.

Really hard to get quotes for this work due to location and how specialised the work is.

However my insurance company have said none of this will make a difference and that's their offer so think I will need to get a loss assessor involved... Really don't want to as just want to get fair compensation and move on with repairs.
