Thank you for posting this. I get the free 2 month card every year and then buy the full Family & Friends one at the discounted price. My children love visiting London and I get the money back I had paid for the railcard in just a couple of trips. :D

ETA: Just realised that the price of a 1 year F&F card is going up to £30 (from £28) and that we'll only get £10 off the full price. In previous years it has been half price. So it will cost £20 for a 1 year railcard this time instead of £14. Still a great deal though. :D

I've done this every year the last 5 years, it saves a small fortune for my kids travelling together as one is now 16 (classed as an adult...actually 17 tomorrow!) so they can travel to Glasgow together much cheaper!

2 months free then £10 of full price is still a great deal for me so I will be ordering, thanks for the heads up :-) xx

This is maybe a silly question but I've never used a railcard before so would appreciate any help. We're travelling from Nottingham to Skegness in the October school holidays and I was planning on booking the train tickets as soon as they become available in July. As the railcard is valid till 31 July does that mean I can use it for booking that trip or would it not be classed as valid as the travel is after 31 July?
    Thanks in advance x

You need to have the railcard with you when you travel.

Aaaah... so it would need to be valid at the time of travel as well as at the time of booking. I'll just buy one with my clubcard vouchers just before I book the tickets then.
    Thanks x

AFAIK it doesn't need to be valid at the time of booking (assuming you book online), just at the time of travel.

As pp said, it only needs to be valid at time of travel. When booking tickets online they don't ask for any proof of entitlement for the discount, you only need it to show the ticket inspector on the train.
Also worth points out that in the T&C's you can buy a ticket for an under 5 (who wouldn't normally need a ticket) to benefit from the discount. ;)

no you defnitely don't have to have the railcard at the time of booking - you have to have it with your tickets when you travel in October.
