MobileShop – Is it Wise?

Options
I just recently got an 18 month contract with MobileShop for the wife with a heavy cashback component (40 a month, 10 months CB), before I checked here ><. No landline so we are both heavy users, and I was thinking of getting the same deal for myself. But after reading the issues people are having I’m having doubts. It will be at least 6 months before I will be dealing with CB’s at all. Would you recommended going with MobileShop?

I recommend you don't go with mobileshop again. Although I am generalising, I bet that there is not a single person now who is getting their cashbacks within the already too long 60 day limit of their t&cs(which was increased from 45 days even for existing customers who had signed up for earlier contracts).
They are blaming problems with their computer systems causing them to process cashback payments manually but this has been going on for months and I simply do not believe them anymore(in fact I have never believed them at all). A year ago I could have said honestly that they were the best cashback company around however now they are the one of the least trustworthy ones and that is despite being in an industry that already has a bad rep.
Maybe you could test them out by posing as a new customer and telling their customer support that you are thinking about taking out a contract with them but have been warned off by friends who have told you that they are not getting their cashbacks on time or even at all. Say you want to know if there are problems that you have to be concerned about and see what they tell you. Even if they give you the standard excuse they have given to everyone chasing their payments at least they will know that they are gaining a bad rep by peeing off all their customers.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Excellent post thor, you hit the nail on the head. Until people post that they are getting their cashbacks paid on time and without having to chase up claims several times, Mobileshop have to be avoided. They have been a disgrace recently and have had ample time to get their act together.
Can they survive all this negative publicity on sites as popular as this and of course lots of others?? I thinks not.
To go with Mobileshop at the moment is a gamble (my opinion), and like all gambles, some you win and some you lose.

I started a Cashback deal with them in August 2006. I posted my first claim in January, opted for the Argos vouchers instead, and received them within the promised time. However, I've had to chase them for my 2nd claim from March. Saying that, when I did chase it, they sent the vouchers promptly. Then again, why should we have to chase these companies.

So, I'd say it's good and bad.

I think I'll stick to the internet deals direct from the mobile companies themselves next time though.

Don't do it. Or wait until their imaginary "system problems" go away

    +1

Stay clear of them at the moment - at best they are deliberatley slowing payments and hoping people take vouchers so they can stay in the black a little longer, at worst...

You could always try writing to the directors of Mobileshop. I have had a look at their previous years financials and they made a mere 90K profit, but did pay the two directors over 250K! On previous two year losses of over 600K total. Also, if anyone is interested they bank with Lloyds TSB.

So based on this I would say it is bleak, also their offers are not that good overall. coolnewmobile.co.uk seems to have some good offers, however they have only been registered since 2005 and have a very week income and also two judgements against them already!

Either way I know I will strongly consider this type of offer when I come to renew in a few months time as the deals are good generally.
