Retirement Advice wanted!

Ok guys, I'm looking to pick your brains.

It looks likely dad might have to retire on health grounds and he's absolutely dreading it tbh, he in his early 70's and has worked all his life.
He scared he's going to get bored as he don't feel ready to retire yet.

For those that have retired what do you do to fill your days?
And those that are planning on retiring in the near future what plans have you made?

I must add that driving is not an option at the moment (not allowed to drive for min of 6 weeks - maybe up to 6 months).
This is where the ultimate problem lays as he's a professional driver for a living so the thought of not being able to drive (not even his car) is devastating for him.

Any ideas for filling the days or hobbies?

Thanks for reading.

Thanks CP, I'll look at those links.

He did mention bowls a few weeks ago but have since gone off the idea!

He very good with his hands and very mechanically minded, we suggested making mini steam engines, mending old clocks, gardening.

I just wondered what others get up to in their spare time (other than running around after the grandchildren!!!)

How about finding out what childrens farms, country parks etc have mini steam engines, they are always looking for retired folk to join the club to keep them working.

Was he quite sociable before, if so getting into a club is a great plan. If he was just sat him his cab running around the country on his own, he might want to do some more solitary things.

Most of my retired friends don't know how they ever had the time to work!!!

We've had some threads which might be helpful on the over 50s board, do take a look there. There was a recent one from someone looking for ideas for part-time work. And although it's gone a bit quiet, there's the 'Skiers and Skaters' thread.
