SIM only Vodafone question

One of the two mobiles on our Vodafone contract is hardly ever used. A helpful bloke @ Vodafone suggested that when the contract comes up for renewal in a few weeks, I switch that one to SIM only. This would save ££s/month.

OK so far. Question is: does that mean I can buy any new handset (the current one is a clunky old Nokia but it works for me) and just switch the existing Vodafone SIM into it?

And then proceed with their SIM-only contract?

(I do not need: a camera, any internet, any other thing, do not need smart phone do not need Apps. All I need and very occasionally is: a call sometimes in Europe, a text now and then: less than 5/month. That's it. I hardly ever use it, but have to have it for occasional out-of-office use.)

Sure, any unlocked phone will work - just remember there are 3 SIM sizes. Alternatively, terminate the contract and go PAYG, you don't get bundled texts or calls, but you will save considerably more!

If your current phone is a vodaphone Nokia and you are happy with it, why not just put the new SIM into the old phone? Also, have you looked at the PAYG options?

Sorry about this, have been on business contract for umpteen years, are you saying that going SIM-only will mean I'll get a new SIM card from Vodafone to replace the existing Vodafone SIM in the Vodafone phone?

    (Everyone has to learn somehow.)

No, have not investigated PAYG yet, this option seems easier. It's a business contract and don't want what sounds like that hassle (charging with credit? reclaiming on expenses? just guessing)

Yes, if you go on a SIM only contract Vodaphone will send you a new SIM and you can put that into whatever phone you want, including the old one - if the old phone is locked to Vodaphone then a new Vodaphone SIM should be fine.

(The only thing to watch out for is that some very new phones have a smaller nano SIM, but I would expect that your old phone has an ordinary micro SIM so that wont be an issue.)

If is a business phone, I guess you aren't looking to save every penny, so if you would rather pay a flat fee every month instead of topping up, then I can see the attraction of that. But equally you could credit the phone with a larger amount, say £20 a time, and that would probably last you a fair time, so you wouldn't have to bother with the expenses side of things that often.

One thing to watch out for is that you mention making calls in Europe. Make sure you know exactly what is included in your deal so you don't accidentally run up a big bill. That's probably where the PAYG option is safer. It's also safer if this is a phone you don't use all the time, so if you lost it you might not notice for a while, giving someone the chance to run up a bill before you realise it is lost.

That is a very helpful reply, thank you! You have made several good points which I shall look into.
