Do O2 ever answer their phone

I'm unfortunately with O2 - my contract renewal date is 7th June, with my next bill date being the 10th May with payment date 24th May by d/d.
I don't wish to renew with them and have been trying without success to call them for 3 days on their 202 number from my mobile to give 30 days notice.
I also tried web chat twice but they are all helpful until they discover I want to terminate my contract then they just leave me on hold.
I went into the O2 shop today where they were as much use as a chocolate tea pot - the rather rude salesman told me I could only cancel by phone, but how can I cancel if they won't answer the blinking phone?!!
I have the address of of Telefonica, is it reasonable to write and cancel?
Has anyone else had this issue?

Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - Drag them down to your level - it's cheaper .

More times than I care to remember - no success there either. They're putting me on hold for 40mins + at a time. It's just not acceptable.Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - Drag them down to your level - it's cheaper .

I've always used the on-line chat facility rather than trying to phone them, it's always worked pretty well. If they're all busy, you don't have to hang on a phone waiting, you just try again later.0
