Buying at your front door

We moved into a new house in a better area than we had been in previously about 18 months ago. Since we've moved in we regularly get people trying to sell to us at our front door. I hate this and find it quite rude and uncomfortable, especially when my husband isn't around. Its my house and I shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable in my own home. I usually end up cutting these people off short and closing the door in their face, which my husband says is rude, but I didn't ask them to come to my door.
Is it just me or does any one else feel like this? What can I do to stop people calling?
Is it just me??

Can you put a little sign up on your door stating that you don't accept cold callers?Oh....I'm not going to lie to you......At the end of the day, when alls said and done......do you know what I mean.........TIDY0

You be as rude as you like if a polite "no thankyou" gets you nowhere. Could try putting up a notice too but they tend to ignore them anyway...
I used to find it uncomfortable and embarrassing but over the years I got ANGRY with them, if they do this job they must expect to have the door slammed on them regularly...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I just go with a simple 'I'm not interested thanks' and then close the door. I will not be dragged into conversation on my own doorstep. Once I've stated that I am not interested, if they continue to talk at me then they are the rude ones and I have no qualms in shutting the door in their face mid-sentence.0

we get jehovas (sp?) witnesses and people from Latter Saints Church that call every week despite me politely telling them I am not interested. They always go on to say can I ask why you are not interested. There sometimes is no getting through to these people that come that I do not want to listen to them0

Tradesmen should use the back door
Just no thankyou is fine, I don't even open the door if I do not know who it is. They are used to it, it's their job.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
I have done reading too!

I dont open the door to anyone! I live in a really dodgy area, and literally dont open the front door, unless im expecting someone...You lied to me Edward. There IS a Swansea. And other places.....

Where I live, we get a lot of travelling people, selling everything from peg bags and crocheted cushions, to 'original' sketches that are obviously fakes.
Usually if you say no thanks, they poke the evil eye at you and tell you your husband will leave you for his secretary...or worse.
I drew the line when one of these people frightened the life out of my 11 year old son when I was not in.
Now, I do the same thing as I do when I get a cold selling phone call...I say, no thanks, I dont need a kitchen, but can I interest you in a conservatory...? We sell cars for a living, so I ask them if they need a new white transit van. Usually they scarper pretty quickly, if you have a bit of a laugh and keep the humour in it.0 -
Thanks guys. I feel better now. My mum and dad have a sign on their door, but it doesn't seem to stop people.
We seem to have a lot of foreign students selling their "original" art work, the only problem is we have so many come around the art work is all the same, really .0 -
Could you perhaps play deaf or do a Manuel from Fawlty Towers - que? que?
followed up by a long sentence in doubledutch? I reckon it would put most people off PDQ! Too much like hard work for most cold callers.0 -
My husband used to say the same thing when I said "I am not interested" and hung up the phone to cold callers.
I have no sympathy for cold callers ever since they could hear my young daughter crying in pain because she had fallen and possibly broken her wrist and when i told them to get off the line so i could call the doctor they went on with their script!!!
Now I get him to go to the door if he is home and have joinrd the telephone preference service."This site is addictive!"
