add shipping details or not?

I've been using MyHermes now for a while and always add the tracking number to paypal so that the customer gets a notification and can see where their parcel is. However, a colleague has said that there can be a good argument for not adding tracking, and to just say it is sent- she doesn't exactly know what the argument is but she says it is more common not to add tracking.

So, as a newbie to tracked items can anyone tell me the pros and cons of actually uploading tracking to paypal?

EDIT. I actually find it easier to add tracking as a reminder to myself as the receipts you get from mYHermes don't show which parcel is which- so it is a doubly sure way of me being able to check which relates to what parcel .

I never do on the rare occasions I send tracked, but I can't see any argument not to - it will save queries from buyers and if any case is raised, all the information is there without you having to fish it out.

Only possible con would be having too many to do.

I'd say your colleague is talking rubbish. Tracking not only covers you but also puts your customers mind at ease. The only time you'd not want to add it is if you were going to claim you sent it and not really done so.

Like I said, your colleague sounds slightly skewed.

We have software that adds the tracking details into the Ebay order. Adding tracking automatically marks the item as dispatched and the buyer gets an email with all the tracking details on and can check progress and delivery date.

Ok thanks, I think I will continue to add tracking then as it makes my records easier anyway.

As a buyer I like it if a seller has added tracking details, it tells me the item has been sent and I have actually used it in the past to track my own parcel (a lot quicker than emailing seller and awaiting reply).

I can't think of a reason why this would be a bad idea, unless of course as others have mentioned it takes time to do so.

I always add tracking details to ebay orders (for the tracked ones, obviously).

Thank you again all, just added the latest lot and dropped them off at MyHermes.

  • The argument against is the fact that often, the parcel doesn't track as delivered, yet it has been. The tracking saying it hasn't can be an incentive for a dishonest buyer to claim.

I hate sellers who send things recorded and don't upload the number. The postman rarely leaves a card which means I always have to contact the seller just to be able to pick up the item!

If sellers are sending items tracked then I'd like to know where the item is so I can plan to be in if possible. Though if it's UK special delivery then marking the item dispatched when it is actually dispatched is sufficient, as it's 1 day later.

Then why bother sending recorded at all... proof of delivery is the only reason to send recorded
