Lawn mower????

Please help!

I am now have a garden for the first time. I've moved to a new build and I have a small-medium sized garden which is turfed. The grass needs to be cut but I don't know what type of lawn mover to buy. I, somewhat surprised by the variety available! Can anyone offer any advice?

A small rotary one (mower with 4 wheels and a blade underneath) make sure the blade is metal it should be anyway also think about storage, hopefully you can keep it somewhere dry and safe also for you an electric model would suit nothing too big or heavy, go to the garden centre to have a look at the display models.

  • Thank you for replying. I have a garage to store it in so that won't be a problem. I wanted an idea of what to look for before heading to a garden centre - too many options!

Also the key with cutting any lawn is regular cutting depending on growth once a week/fortnight will be fine. if it is long at the moment set the blade to its highest setting and then leave it a few days and cut it a bit shorter so not to stress the lawn, a lot of people cut it far to short and wait until it looks a mess before hacking it to death.

If you like stripes then get a rotary with a rear roller (2 front wheels, roller at the back).

Petrols are just fantastic. Very quick and will handle long grass if you leave it long between shaves. I would never buy an electric again as I found they did not last long, it was a pain handling the cord and not so great with long grass.

A small Hayter or Honda may seem an bigger outlay but if serviced will out live you.

You don't say how big your garden is except in subjective terms which tells me nothing.

I agree with the suggestion of an electric rotary such as the above. I have a bigger version of the above, the Rotak 43 I think, and it is excellent. Make sure the blade is wide enough to take a decent cut and the collection bin is big enough, otherwise you will continually have to empty it. I have a 17m by 17m garden and found a smaller mower irritating.

For a small garden I would recomend a rotary electric.

This one got 75% and best buy rating from which

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flymo-Visimo-Rotary-Electric-Lawnmower/dp/B00195PDJI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1368101378&sr=8-3&keywords=Flymo+Venturer+32

I would also recomend that you hose it down (once unplugged of course) after each cutt, as the bigest cause of faults with Electric rotary mowers is clogging of either the mechanics or the blades.

Ive a £20 JCB mower that has done me for over 3 years now and has a roller on the back, so lines all the way.

Anoter recomendation is to cut each time in different direction ie straight, then 45 degrees left to rightm then 45 degrees right to left..

    Hope this helps

I have a 34 Bosch like the one in the above link.

It's great, a nice rear roller to get stripes, simple to operate and will last a good amount of time. Not too noisy either.
I'd never go back to a hover mower now and will look to a petrol one for my next grass cutting device.

    Brilliant replies. Thank you.

As for the size of the garden.... I haven't measured it but I'd say it's about 3.5m wide and 8m long. It's quite little!

That is not big! Go for the smaller rotary electric. Just to add to the earlier post, do not get a hover mower, they are awful.
