Focus 1.4 1.6 1.8

I was on here before and nearly made my mind up on a Fiesta 1.2 or 1.4 to drive in the city under £2000.

As ive been looking I can see the focus seems a bit more desirable and a bit cheaper in some cases.

IM guessing the 1.4s are the same but will the 1.6 and 1.8 really drink a lot more fuel in the city for city driving?

Is there that much in it?

For the price the focus has more space and could be good in city but not sure.

Thanks in advance

We own a 1.6 Focus and a 1.4 Fiesta, the fiesta is a LOT newer but I nearly always jump into the focus ( much better drive) ..............haven't a clue about the running costs

For heavy traffic or lots of low speed city work you want the smaller engine.

If you do longer journeys at higher speeds then a larger engine may actually use less fuel.

You need to balance that out. Also bear in mind the focus is a fair size to be shifted by a 1.4 engine.

I have a 1.2 fiesta which averages 32mpg so a 1.8 focus can also do this on a good day so a 1.4 or 1.6 6might be ok then? I really need space as a sports coach but also am concerned about city driving. And cost on my cars longevity and wear and tear and mpg.

I have a Focus Estate 1.6. and am averaging 35 MPG (ok, 34.968 currently per my spreadsheet).

Not city driving though. Just a 14 mile trip to work and back again. Takes around 25 mins on average each way so not clear running!

My best tank was 39.424 MPG and involved mostly motorway miles. My worst was 32.682 MPG.

I have a 1.6 focus and mainly use it around town and the odd journey up the motorway about once a week. I get about 30 mpg. The 2000 2.0 focus I have just got shut of couldn't half move but it sure drank petrol for fun on the journeys I was using it for ( that was given to me by family when my last car was wrote off). I put about £25 a week ( normal work week) in mine now compared to the £40 +a week I was putting into the other.

The 1.6 doesn't feel no where near as powerful as the 2.0 did so I would be very wary of dropping to 1.4 for a big car.

For stop start city driving vehicle weight is a factor in fuel economy that will favour a Fiesta. But I'd be comparing the official economy figures (see eg Parkers) and Honest John real mpg figures for the models you're comparing to see how big the difference is.

If running costs are important compare insurance quotes and road tax too.

A Focus is obviously more practical due to its size, and offers better crash protection if that's important to you.

Go for the 1.6 Focus. Get the oil changed every 6000 miles and it will last a long time.

IMO Ignore the 1.4 for a start, got for a 1.6, or if you need more power, bypass the 1.8 and go straight to a 2.0.

1.4 on a focus will be bad, petty much same or worse than a 1.6 in fuel efficiency to be honest becasue the power to weight ratio is bad the 1.4 has to work harder to move the car.

fiesta 1.4 would be best for fuel efficiency imo.

modern 1.2s with their tsi engines have decent punch. but with your budget you're looking at 2004 latest so they will just have standard injection engines.
