I simply say (before they start talking, as their Watchtower or bible is generally on view), thanks but I am really not interested. Then I close the door quietly but firmly, whether they are talking or not.

I tried that and they just went on and on!

Next time close the door as well!

I have never been bothered by people turning up at my door trying to convert me to Christianity. I did once tell a Jehovahs witness that I was just going out the door to go and give blood. That saw him hot foot it down the path quicker than the proverbial !!!!!! off a stick.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

(I take it that's a general term for anyone who follows a religion, so don't mind me using it in rerference to you)

Why do you say that? Plenty of people are religious and not nutters.

A clear sign of being the latter is knocking on stranger's doors and attempting to convert them. Most don't do that.

  • If they're Jehovah's Witnesses, you could try calling your local Kingdom Hall and asking them to stop visiting your address. They're usually pretty courteous about doing this.

A firm 'no thank you' and close the door is the basic response. If they're really persistent I'll explain that I have absolutely no problem with anyone believing in God, or in Jesus as the son of God (as far as I'm concerned if someone genuinely believes in something then it's not up for question) but I find the idea of aligning my beliefs with a religion that has used torture, rape and genocide to spread a belief purportedly focused around love and tolerance to be absolutely repugnant, and that includes all offshoots and denominations of that belief. Then I shut the door while they're still blinking...

As an aside, if they try and put a foot in the door, ring the police. They're seriously unlikely to be a geniune missionary of any kind and may well be a confidence trickster trying to gain entry to your home.
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

I tell them (politely and with a smile) that I don't wish to waste their time, as I don't believe in God and am not about to start. :)

I have to say I really disagree with them knocking on your door - I think it is probably a way of catching people off-guard and/or feeling a bit vulnerable. *dons hard hat*

I have the MSE sign on my door that says no cold callers and includes religious groups. I haven't had anyone knock since (yet i've seen them around.)

When i didn't have a sign, i think they could tell i wasn't really interested, so just used to hand me a leaflet and be on their way.

Wow what a horrible thread. I have no religious belief whatsoever but to call people loonies and nutters because they do is just vile.

As others have said a polite 'no thank you' and closing the door works wonders.

Like all doorstep salesmen, they're relying on our British politeness meaning that we won't just shut the door in their face while they're talking. Shut the door in their face while they're talking.

The ones that I really despise are the ones that haul their tired, often distressed children around with them, presumably in the hope that people will be more amenable to persuasion. They're the equivalent of beggar gangs using children to pluck at the heartstrings, and they show how smug sanctimony doesn't stop people from being bad parents.

Tell them you're Jewish: they don't like that either, works with the BNP/EDL too :-)
