I had an email earlier this week from Dabs about a laptop under £300 with XP, I didn't take a lot of notice as I don't need one.Im tempted by the Toshiba I'm after a laptop that basically I can use wirelessly so that I can surf the net in the same room as my wife when she's watching all her soaps and I dont have to sit the other end of the house on the pc.
Heard a few bad things regarding Vista too which is slightly offputting. Is there a laptop in this price range (£300) with XP on it?
What do you reckon should I go for the tosh?
Thanks,
Pete.
It might be worth having a look.0 -
It is big sprog's 16th birthday in a couple of weeks time so a laptop for when she goes up to 6th Form in September is a likely present.
I like the Tosh from Play, but would rather have a laptop with Vista Home Premium rather than Home Basic. Can anyone point to a decent (and cheap!) widescreen laptop with Vista Home Premium?

While this all may seem like a bargain, I would advise looking elsewhere.
I spent over £1000 on a FS laptop two years ago, in order to take to the US with me on business for a year (i'm a photographer).
My laptop pretty much destroyed the trip for me, it was always going wrong, depsite having a 3.2Ghz P4 processor, it was incredibly slow and always giving me grief. It would literally develop a new fault weekly.
I was under the impression that P4 processors (desktop) in a laptop is generally a bad idea due to the heat produced and power demands. Also £1000 worth of laptop 2 years ago is about the same performance as £500ish laptops these days.0 -

Contact your daughter's University; they probably have a deal in place already and some of them are pretty good VFM (note emphasis on 'value' rather than 'price') as they sometimes include upgrades and longer warranties. Also, if you buy the officially-recommended model, your daughter might well be able to get more technical support from the University than otherwise.0 -
Great response, I agree my daughter's bought a non-MS windows Laptop with 12% off through the University. There's this one at Dabs - standard sort of entry-level spec but one of it's best points is the screen quality apparently:

I had a Fujitsu Siemens, in the space of ten months I actually had use of it for about 4. It broke down so many times it was untrue. The motherboard failed within 8 weeks and that was just the start.
In the end Dixons had the thing for 30+ days, I kicked up a stink and replaced it with my trusty Toshiba.
I really wouldnt touch this, even the guy in Dixons said they were always breaking down!0
