INSERT BY MARTIN: This laptop has now sold out - there are others mentioned in the discussion below.
Spotted this budget Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo V3515 notebook at Microdirect, for what looks a very good price, £293.74 plus £6.49 postage . Amongst other things it has a 1.8ghz Intel celeron processor, 512MB RAM, built-in wireless, 60GB hard disk, CD (but not DVD) writer, and Windows Vista home basic. This should be plenty quick enough for most people's needs.
However, if you don't believe the 512MB RAM will be enough (Vista is very memory hungry), instead of opting for another model, consider upgrading. Another 512MB can be had for under £16 from Crucial. If you want to add more than that, it's worth checking the prices at Aria and ebuyer, which are still both offering £10 off £30 through Google Checkout.
Hope this helps somebody.

Changing laptop memory is usually much easier than changing pc memory.
Normally its just a case of removing a screw to open a flap

While this all may seem like a bargain, I would advise looking elsewhere.
I spent over £1000 on a FS laptop two years ago, in order to take to the US with me on business for a year (i'm a photographer).
My laptop pretty much destroyed the trip for me, it was always going wrong, depsite having a 3.2Ghz P4 processor, it was incredibly slow and always giving me grief. It would literally develop a new fault weekly. The motherboard was replaced twice, each time i was without the machine for 6 weeks (one time it delayed (and reduced the time available to me) a trip to Utah by 6 weeks, whilst I was stuck in a motel waiting for the (promised) 7 day return.)
When the problem happened again (third time), a couple of weeks after the warranty expired, I called the UK "customer service" team who literally laughed at me. The US customer services where slightly better, but only after arguing and fighting them every step of the way.
I still have to use use the laptop as my main computer, unfortunately a cheapo laptop is simply not powerful enough for my needs, and I cannot afford to replace it yet. I estimate this machine probably adds at least two extra hours every single day to my work as I constantly have to reboot etc. The screen is pitiful, it flashes on and off quite often, and is incapable of being calibrated as you simply do not have any control over it.
Anyway, your call, don't say I didn't warn you when the UK customer service staff are treating you like something they stepped in. Good luck with it.0 -
I've just come via this link from the weekly email. I have to say that this weeks chat tips are rubbish. The free meal deal is rubbish and so is this. I would spen that little bit more and get a Pentium Centrino Core Duo processor rather than a Celeron. Especially when running Vista.0
-
Im tempted by the Toshiba I'm after a laptop that basically I can use wirelessly so that I can surf the net in the same room as my wife when she's watching all her soaps and I dont have to sit the other end of the house on the pc.
Heard a few bad things regarding Vista too which is slightly offputting. Is there a laptop in this price range (£300) with XP on it?
What do you reckon should I go for the tosh?
Thanks,
Pete.I'll get me coat!0 -

rubbish !!!Not everything that's cheap is a bargain0 -
I spent the extra bit and got the Dell 6400 with a Core Duo processor, 1 GB ram and Wireless at £384 after Quidco...very impressed so far.Join the Sarcasm Appreciation Society.
