im guessing it will come up so will have to declare it although I fear I may lose the job as a result

Use of that information must be "fair" and the organisation is required to have a policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders. The offence must be relevant to the position for it to disqualify you. You must be given a change to discuss it, so I would simply emphasise that a long time ago, when you were a kid, you briefly fell in with a bad crowd and got caught up in something you didn't understand at the time. You learned from it an are a better person now.

I'm not going to pretend that some organisations don't reject people for old/minor/irrelevant convictions on the disclosure. It happens, although it shouldn't. As someone who makes the vetting decisions based on PVG checks (Scottish disclosures), I consider that the organisations that do this are not acting within the spirit (and probably the letter of the law). These unjustified rejections that give the whole system a bad name.

If OP was convicted then the conviction would almost certainly be spent - for it not to be spent they would have had to be jailed for over 30 months. I suspect OP would remember that...

An enhanced CRB check includes offences whcih are spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

It's not 100% a given that it will come up. I had a caution when I was 23-ish, much the same as you with the wrong people at the wrong time, I had an enhanced CRB, for working with children, it came back completely clear.

The caution was with the Met and is was 20 odd years before the CRB was done.

And if you read the post I quoted, it was suggesting obtaining a Basic Disclosure to get details of any unspent convictions, which would not be any use at all in this scenario.

A Standard CRB check is at a sufficient level to reveal spent convictions, it does not have to be enhanced.

And if you read the post you quoted, you'd see I didn't say any such thing. I pointed out that the OP could get a basic disclosure if they wanted to and what that contained, but I was not suggesting any course of action at all. The main point of my comment was that you can't do a criminal records check on yourself which would actually be what they needed, and unless you know any different - in which case, I bow to your superior knowledge - remains the case.

At the moment you can't do an enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) check on yourself (moves are afoot to change this) but what you can do if you really want to find out what is on your record is go to the police and do a Subject Access Request asking them for all the details held about you on the PNC. This check will show up arrests, cautions, convictions and any other information they hold on you - so if the thing you are concerned about isn't on the PNC print it won't show on your DBS.
