iPad 2 will be more than perfect for you. My advice would be to check the Apple refurbish store at 12:30 midnight (thats when they reload it with fresh stock).
Decent savings to be made, comes with warranty and are in NEW condition.0 -
If you have a smart phone with a decent data package on your contract, dont waste your time with any 3G tablet, I have an iphone 5 and ipad mini and often when out and about, because browsing and doing some stuff it easier on the ipad i use my phone as a personal hotspot. I dont know about the nexus tablet how to do it, but i'd bet my wife that it can, so get something that will do it with your phone (not sure ipad will connect to non-iphone???) then when you have 3G on your phone and no wifi for tablet you can still use it?0

Based on that, you're best going for a 'mainstream' android android. Not a cheap one. The key thing is, you want one that most apps support (e.g. the Sky Go app won't work on certain android tablets)Looking to get a Ipad / tablet. So much out their I need some advice please. I will looking at the cheapest one to get for what I want it to do.
The 'cheapest' I can think of is the Nook HD+ (10", dual core, custom Android skin but now supports the Play store). It's £179 (16gb). It 'should' be simpler to use than a normal android tablet. You can also add an SD card to expand the memory (e.g. £20 extra spend to store a lot of media) http://uk.nook.com/tablets/nook-hd-plus - major downpoint - no camera
A refurbished ipad 2 would cost you around £259 - £80 more.
Tablets are expensive, there's no getting over that. I love my ipad2, it 'just works' (which is important for my family + kids), however I'd be quite happy with an Android tablet myself (probably more happy since I find Android far more functional and less restrictive)0 -

This is an important consideration - and one of the reasons I advocate the iPad so much.
Android is a developers nightmare - there are so many variations with hardware, such as screen sizes, resolutions etc that it's almost impossible to have a fully polished application. With the iPad, there are very few variations in that respect - so it's very easy to develop something that you know is going to be right for everyone.
It's a similar scenario to the Windows vs Mac debate - anyone can use Windows/Android software on their hardware, but software developers can never be totally sure what you have is going to be compatible. The 'closed' system of iOS/Mac does give developers and users that confidence - and that's why iOS & Mac software is typically robust (not saying all of it is, because a poor developer can still ship a poor product on any platform).
The anti-Apple brigade will often cite the 'closed' system they operate, but it's not a case of Apple being 'mean' - it's there to protect the quality of the offering.0 -

Compare the BBC iplayer app.
The iOS is far better, even though they have spent a fortune on the android version. The Dev's admit that every time time you do something for the android system android changes the goal posts.
One dev even went as far to blame apple spys in the android camp.:A:jLibertas Supra Omnia:j:A0 -
I'd recommend an iPad Mini or a Nexus 7 as they're likely to be the best for their price brackets and your minimal requirements.
I have a Nexus 7, iPad 2 and iPhone 5.
I agree.....
If you go android, you MUST go Nexus. Really the 7 or the 10 are both great.
Avoid the others, they are either very cheap wannabees or overpriced wannabees.
Though if you can stretch to an ipad (They are expensive) you will enjoy it and use it more.
Many a tab ends up in a draw unused, unloved and unwanted. Wishing it was the forbidden fruit...:A:jLibertas Supra Omnia:j:A0 -
Whereas the iPad ....... put it this way, I use it ALL the time. Although I'm on my laptop at present, the iPad is playing my music for meEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Bought the iPad 3 last year and more than happy, only problem is that they will only Bluetooth to other Apple products. Mine is wifi only but now wish I'd paid the extra for the cellular version as I'm now looking at having to buy the Apple iPhone for when I'm abroad and no wifi available.0

Have a look at MiFi devices - usually around £60, and they provide an ad-hoc wifi network which your iPad (and any other device) can connect to. I have one of these so myself and my wife can both connect, rather than having the expense of 2 cellular iPads for the rare occasions we're out of range with Wifi. Get an unlocked or sim-free one and you can use any sim card - cheaper to get a local one when abroad.0
