Trying to leave my ISP early

Hi,
I'm currently with Eclipse Internet and due to their pricing structure I want to migrate to a different ISP that offers more for less..
The problem...
Eclipse want to charge me for the remainder of my contract (about a year - £666) even through I wont be a customer any longer.
Can they do this?
Is there anyway I can legally exit the contract without being punished so much?
HELP!!!!

Do you know what a contract is?
Did you read what you signed?
Are you seriously asking a stupid question like this?
If you sign a contract for a minimum term then that means you have to stay with them for that minimum term. If you want to leave then you have to pay off the remainder of your contract.
Why do you think you have a sense of entitlement? What if your employer said to you one day that you're fired for no reason even though you signed a contract for job security of 3 years.... According to your way of thinking you'd have to accept and resign.
They should really teach basic contract law in schools. it's not a hard concept.0 -
Yes. If you are still in minimum term, they can charge you the amount owing on the contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

If that's the contract -tough.
If you don't want to pay it and don't mind them passing you to debt collectors then get a new phone line installed and just cancel the bank DD.0 -

The clue is the word contract. Common sense isn't very common!0

thats an expensive contract. it should not be any more than the remaining monthly charges (total) on the contract.
e.g. if you pay £20 a month, and you have 4 months left on the contract then it should be no more than £80 in total.
Some good ISPS will charge you a little less because their costs are less when you leave. But don't expect that from every ISP.0
