I am absolutely useless with technology so bear with me, but is the above possible? We have loads of camcorder tapes which we can look at on the tv but would love to be able to put them onto cd. If this is possible what do we need to buy?
Many thanks

You could use your camcorder plugged into a DVD recorder.
Or PC based - You will need software, a decent PC with plenty of memory, a decent graphics card and then some editing software.

The DVD recorder route is much easier than the PC route. Manipulating video on a PC is invariably entering a world of pain.

If you have (or can borrow) a DVD recorder, it's simply a matter of plugging the Camcorder into one of the DVD recorder's inputs (often they have an input on the front for exactly this purpose). You then just play the content on the camcorder and record on the DVD recorder. If the recorder has a hard drive as well, you can use this to tidy up the camcorder content, add chapters, etc.

Use DVD-R blank discs for optimum compatibility with other machines, and don't forget to finalise the disc(s).

You want to put them on DVD, not CD - unless you want to only keep the audio track.

You need a DVD recorder, your current playback device (the camcorder?) and a lead to connect them. The type of lead will vary depending on what connectors you have on each.

If you want to edit the footage, get an HDD/DVD recorder so that you can edit on the HDD and transfer the edited footage to DVD

    Thanks for all your replies
Sorry, I mean't that I wanted them on DVD not CD!
Penrhyn, I don't know what a DV is! The cassettes are like music cassettes that we use to put in cassette recorders in the 70's if that's any help
    Many thanks

Some types of Camcorder cassettes had a frame thing that you could use to put them directly into a VCR player....

8mm tapes are analog, DV are digital, The is also VHS-C. Depending on what you have depends on what you have to do.

So, do you have the Camcorder to play them back from? I take it this is how you play them back through the TV?

What make and model is it?

    Thanks googler,
I can't lay my hands on the vhs one at the mo but the 8mm is a Samsung VP-M50.We still have the camcorder but my concern is that in the future it will stop working ( it is 12 years old) and therefore we will not be able to access the tapes.
