It's not remotely dangerous. Worst case scenario, someone doesn't enter their PIN backwards and the police don't arrive. Or perhaps the person does put it in backwards and is then disappointed when the police ... don't arrive.

Panicking because their pin was rejected whilst being held at knife point? Nope not dangerous at all.

How about an increase in confidence because they think the police will be turning up?

No it isn't dangerous at all.

Just enter the PIN incorrectly 3 times. ATM will swallow your card.

Should be easy enough to mistype your PIN if you have a knife to your throat.

Anyone got any numbers on how many people do have a knife to their throat at ATMs?

I've been threatened with a knife before, managed to escape and called the police (but was still in the same building with the knife holder also in the same building). They kept me on the phone for just under 30 minutes, which is how long it took them to turn up. Of course, as soon as they noticed the police, the knife was duly hidden and they denied all knowledge (This wasn't at an ATM, I don't think the knife holder would allow you to ring the police whilst entering your PIN.)

I don't think anyone will be standing next to an ATM for 30 minutes waiting for the police to arrive, even if it was true.

The only time the police did turn up early was when someone broke into my house and I knocked them unconscious. They didn't seem interested at first until I said I attacked them and knocked them to the ground and they've not moved since. Then they were there within 5 minutes. You can see where their priorities are!

Not always, some block your PIN but give you the card back. You then need to contact your card issuer for advice.
