Petrol Cost Cutting Article Discussion

I have a question that hopefully someone knows the answer to.
When filling up with petrol, once you hear the clunk which tells you the tank is full, i normally press the nozzle another 5-10 times to get a bit extra in. Martin's petrol article implied that filling anything after the clunk, goes into an overflow, and is wasted? is that true, or am i mis-reading the article?
Am i wasting £'s of petrol by doing this?0 -
Sorry to add to the other posts before this saying the same thing but please correct the spelling. Tyre, not tire.0

I'm afraid I can't agree with the comment about ASDA petrol giving poorer fuel consumption.
I keep a check on consumption for every tank I fill and usually I get surprisingly little difference between brands, surprising in that the consumption varies so little, not specifically relating to the fuel used which usually comes from the same source irrespective of brand. However I have noticed that since starting to use their credit card I have been using ASDA more frequently and I have calculated a reduction in consumption of 1 to 2 mpg against a normal of about 40 mpg. I don't believe this is conclusive but it does contradict what a previous contributor has said. I suspect that this may be as much due to a difference in the accuracy of metering and not to the ASDA brand though the improvement was noted at more than one ASDA station.if i had known then what i know now0 -
I am currently using biodiesel in my old Rover, it is costing me 70p a litre (duty paid), and seems to last the same as mineral diesel. If you want to give it a go, try this site to find a place near you.

He/she also isn't aware of the recent change in the law which means you don't have to pay duty if you use below a certain amount.
Prices have come down by 2p on unleaded where I am recently. I wonder if this is just a price war after tesco's finished the 5p off a litre deal, or if it reflects an actual drop in cost and we will continue to see dencreased prices, or as usual the competition will end and the prices will rocket.0 -

bizarrely, no. And I can't tell you what sort of price each place is charging, either. Just know its cheap, green, and doesn't seem to be causing me any engine problems. Didn't know you could evade duty altogether either, my supplier has to charge duty on what she sells, and also vat. And it still beats Tescos!0 -
Why, if the $-£ rate is so favourable and Oil is priced in $s, are petrol prices going up almost weekly?
The £ to US$ has dropped in the last month from about 2.06 to 1.98 see http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/fds/hi/business/market_data/currency/default.stm
The cost of oil has dropped approx US$8 a barrel, which is why I filled up at 91.9p per litre yesterday and not 96.9 like i did a month ago http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/fds/hi/business/market_data/commodities/default.stm.....0 -
While stuck in 14 miles of traffic this morning and hearing on the radio that the price of fuel is going up 2p per litre I had an idea for a new thread.
I decided 4 months ago to give up working in London and get a job where I could drive to work - thinking it would save me money on travel. I wasn't right. My car is a little Ford Fiesta and it costs only £35 a week to fill up but I am using all this to travel to work. So I was wondering - Is there a way we can save money while we drive.
I will start the ball rolling with a website I found - https://www.petrolprices.com
This site is regularly updated with the nearest petrol stations near you that sell the cheapest fuel.
So get your your thinking caps on and lets save some money while driving and confirm things like does it really save you petrol if you coast in neutral!

The biggest moneysaving tip for motoring I have is to keep a supply of cheap snacks in the car! Stops me going through McDonalds drive through when I'm so hungry I just can't wait for my tea0
