Problems with RIAS

Hope some-one can help me on this. Last year, I insured my car with RIAS (where insurance gets better with age) the annual premium being £420.
In March this year, I received a renewal notice telling me that the premium had increased by £100 and was due in April, and that failure to renew would result in my policy being cancelled. As I wasn't too happy with the quote, I shopped around and found a much cheaper option with another company.
I have just received a letter from RIAS, demanding a payment of £35 for a cancellation fee.
As the policy was not renewed, how can they demand this fee? I would like some advice before I contact them on this matter.
Thanks in advance.

Did you keep the renewal letter? What was the actual wording on it about 'What to do'.0

Was the policy on an automatic renewal? Many companies do this.
When they stated "failure to renew would result in cancellation" did they not mean that failure to pay the renewal would result in cancellation?
How did you pay originally?
If you can send them proof that you have been dual insured they will probably waive the £35 fee.0 -
Sorry about the delay in replying, but had to re-register as my log-in details were rejected. After repeated attempts to rectify, I had to modify my username and re-register.
Anyway, I have my subject matter with RIAS, paid the money (don't want my credit rating damaged!) and just received a letter saying I am due for a refund.
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
Fingers crossed.
