Anyone remember the Sega Mega Drive

Hi,
I recently bought a Sega Mega Drive 1 from a car boot sale. It's a UK PAL model. It came with Sonic the Hedgehog. My friend has a lot of Japanese game cartridges which are of a different shape. I was wondering would I be able to play those cartridges if I widen the cartridge slot?
Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Looking at a video on youtube the mega drive 2 just needs the top taking off. Dont know about the mega drive 1 but its got to be worth taking off the top before trying to widen the slot.0

Nice! You can't play the Jap games in the PAL megadrive without a mod or converter.
Easy solution is something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sega-Mega-Drive-Japanese-Cartridge-Adaptor-Converter-Japanese-ToeJam-Earl-/261200336208?pt=UK_Video_Games_Cables_and_Adaptors&hash=item3cd0c0d550
I'm a retro game collector myself0 -

As Gunstar said, converters are easily available, the only problem is they probably cost far more than the OP paid for console in the first place.0 -

Yep - have one in my bottom drawer in front of me!
Did some sorting and moving around recently, and couldn't resist a game (or two, three....) of Desert Strike!"Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."

PC emulators are available - they aren't illegal, but downloading ROMs would be.
There's a collection of Megadrive games on a single PS3 disk - not sure about XBox.
Personally I'd buy a raspberry pi and mod it to run an emulator.Legal team on standby0 -
I've still got my MegaDrive in the bottom of my wardrobe.

Apparently there is a little more to it than just widening the slot, because of the 50Hz/60Hz thing.0
