1 wk or 1 month notice to our lodger?

We have a lodger who is driving me nuts with whinging about things in the house. I would see his point if it wasn't all stated/the same when he moved in.

Anyway, I want to give him notice to leave before I snap. When we advertised it was £xx weekly, he decided to work out the monthly rate and paid monthly. I was fine with this but now I'm unsure whether we give him 1wk notice to move or 1month? He pays rent on the 1st for the coming month if that matters.

To anyone getting a lodger - make sure you make it clear they need to clean their fair share! Lol

A week doesnt really give someone time to find somewhere else to live does it?

Did you draw up any paperwork/ contract? If so, what does it say on there re notice?

Otherwise, I'd give a week notice and get rid.

No but I read somewhere that was the legal requirement and to be quite frank the way he whines you'd think he'd want to leave ASAP.

He's making me feel rather afraid of using my own home

It says a week and weekly payments.

So paying monthly doesn't matter?

There is no legal requirement to give any notice at all. You can ask the lodger to leave right now if you wished.....although that wouldn't be very nice. A week's notice is fair. Maybe two weeks if you think you could put up with them for another week.

Ahhh ok - that makes me feel better. I'm not mean so 2wks would be a good compromise. I'm off to type a letter and talk to him tomorrow.

I'm glad youve come to a decision but i am concerned that you are feeling afraid in jn your own home.

Hope you manage to sort it out today. I had a lodger when i was with my ex, he was awful. My ex was not a very nice person, and the only reason he had him as a lodger was to make sure i was not bringing any strange men home (paranoid!). To be honest, i hated being alone in the house with him. Made me feel very uncomfortable. So i can see why you would want him out your house when he makes you feel like that.

I had a lodger once that really p***ed me off. I gave her notice, threw her out and put all of her possessions in the front garden all on the same day. Was I bothered that she was homeless? Not in the slightest.

Well... I decided I should ask my partner again what he thinks and again he thinks we shouldn't give notice. He gave no logical reason for this except "the money". We don't need it... It's nice but we don't need it.

So I decided I would leave (literally upped and left), with a note to say I will return once the lodger has gone. My partner seems to really want him to stay... But then he isn't the cleaning/washing fairy so he doesn't see the problem in the lodgers constant digs at the house. E.g "there's no bathmat"... I removed it because knowone but me was washing it! "The stairs are dusty"... Well we all use them so hoover? I do it bi-weekly... He does it never.

I've so far enjoyed a rather nice evening at my parents house, slept well and don't feel I need to be scrubbing the floors at 5m pregnant on crutches. Bliss.

Now I know I can give whatever notice I damn well please, this is now just a personal issue with my partner...and I don't make threats I don't keep :mad: so I guess I return once the lodger leaves (or he has an agreed date to leave!).
