Keeping my number query

I have had a contract with the phone provider 3 for nearly 2 and a half years. Ive been looking at upgrading to an iphone5 and noticed Carphone Warehouse have a very good deal.
Ive called 3 and been into their store but they cannot match the offer. The strange thing is the Carphone Warehouse deal is also with the 3 network.
Speaking to Carphone Warehouse today on their web chat they said its possible to start a contract with them on 3 and still keep my same number as long as i have a PAC code.
Speaking to 3 for 30 mins trying to get my PAC code they said 'Its not possible to keep the same number if i change from my contract with them to a 3 contract with Carphone Warehouse'.
So it is possible to get a PAC code from 3 on my current contract with them and give it to Carphone Warehouse for another contract with 3 and keep my number???
3 said even if i did this i would still have to phone them again to cancel my contract as well. Is this true??
Thanks for any help.

I'm no expert, but I'm fairly certain that you can't port out and then straight back in to the same network.
You have to 'park' your number somewhere else for a wile (1 month?)0 -
No, it is not possible to port a number from '3' to a new contract with '3' bought through CPW or any other company.
In such case the number has to be ported in two steps via another network PAYG sim.0 -
PAC out to PAYG with someone else, then PAC back into Three. There is no period of time you have to be away from Three to do it.0

So first i get a cheap phone on PAYG with another provider.
I then port my number to them and after this ring 3 and cancel my 1 month rolling contract.
As soon as this is done i can then get my new iphone 5 from Carphone Warehouse on 3 network and again get my MAC code from the new provider and port my number back to 3?

It can be just a PAYG sim, possibly free.reecesanford wrote: »So first i get a cheap phone on PAYG with another provider.
The contact gets terminated automatically at the time of porting. However, don't rush with cancelling the DD until you pay the final bill and are sure that you don't owe anything.I then port my number to them and after this ring 3 and cancel my 1 month rolling contract.
PAC [STRIKE]code[/STRIKE]As soon as this is done i can then get my new iphone 5 from Carphone Warehouse on 3 network and again get my MAC code
Some providers may ask you to topup your PAYG sim first.0
