Virgin Media account email login

Virgin Media insist on me using their chosen login (email address and password). I have tried to persuade them several times to allow me to use my chosen email as my main login to get access to my accounts/phone bills etc. but they insist that this isn't possible even though their email address is the same as my chosen one apart from a 1 inserted after my name.
Does anyone know a good practical reason why this isn't possible?

I use my own email address to login to my Virgin Media account online, when I login I have a link to the right which says my profile.
I click that and can change the email address and/or password myself...0
