CapitalOne replacing my card due to suspected fraudulent activity

Just spoken at length with someone from Cap1 Fraud dept.
Apparently my personal details have been "compromised".
They cannot advise me how they know this. They believe my date of birth, post code as well as the a/c no, expiry date and CVC are in the hands of some fraudster somewhere, but can't tell me how they know this.
They will now cancel the account and send me a new card with all new details on it.
This is fine as far as it goes, however if someone has my name, address and DOB, hello identity theft!
This is REALLY scary.
Any idea of what I might be able to do to protect myself?0 -

This is REALLY scary.
And the REALLY scary thing is that almost everyone who knows me, and many who don't, have my name, address and date of birth.
Name, address and date of birth are not secret pieces of information.0 -
I agree, but the point here is that a credit card company knew before I did that some fraudster somewhere has got hold of these details.
I wish I knew how they could have known this before I did.....
and then despite having this info, they still allowed a fraudulent transaction to get onto my account.
Scary!0 -

Clearly they have been informed either by Visa/mastercard or the police.
If its that amount of info then it has to be from a company you have had to supply all the details too.
Not heard of any major account hacks of late.pinklady21 wrote: »They will now cancel the account and send me a new card with all new details on it.

Scary!
Card issuers regularly receive lists of cards which may have been compromised. Quite often there is no fraud. If transactions are made before a card is stopped ie, just before they get notification of the compromise, the transactions can already be in the system, so will debit the account.
It's not really scary, now your card is cancelled, you can forget about it all.0 -

Which is why I use a Georgian address on any Companies House paperwork, and c/o the Council offices on anything on my Cllr role.
The only people that have my address are the bank, family, close friends and any other finance companies I deal with, plus the taxman, a few local takeaways etc.
Well, I think that's the case anyway!

A bit extreme using an address from 250 years ago isn't it?0 -
Hmmmmm - this is really scaring me now.
Today the postman delivered an invoice for the fraudulent transaction that appeared on my card last week. Invoice issued by Southall Travel, a company I had never heard of and obviously had no dealings with.
The address is mine, but the name? Something unpronouncable and probably asian. Rudimentary facebook search on the name pulls up someone with the same name living in - Southall!
Think a visit to the Boys in Blue is in order.
Has this happened to anyone else? I am racking my brains trying to work out how my details have been compromised.
Only place I can think of would be online sites like Amazon or Paypal. Anyone heard of any recent data leaks?0 -
In the past I've had some Capital One cards where there has been a 'compromise' and I've had a new card issued.
Like you I've only used the card at respected retailers but it's still happened.
I was baffled about how on Earth someone had managed to gain my details but hats off to Capital One for getting it sorted and taking action.
Fingers crossed a visit to the Boys in Blue gets this sorted for you, I assume Capital One are processing a chargeback to Southall Travel? It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Yes indeed, the transaction appears to have been reversed back out of my account, so the travel co will be the loser here.
But how can this have happened? I have worked for the banking industry in the past and as a result I am probably more careful than most with my card details and never give out information to anyone or any website that I do not trust.
All most odd.0
