well it would be romantic if he could choose EXACTLY what we would like.

But short of "subtly" pointing out what you'd like (and then its not really him choosing anyway), then most guys would have no clue. And therefore you'd have an expensive thing that you have to wear every day for 50 years or so and may not like. which seems daft.

Bluenile is a sensible option and they have a UK website.

They have some pretty nice Engagement and Weddings rings too.

    I just had to have a look.:o

I think blue sapphires go really nicely with white gold, a lovely contrast.

Emeralds & rubies don't seem - at least to me - to go as well with white gold.

No idea if the OP is considering white gold (although probably not if the gold he's thinking of using is old), just commenting on neverdespairgirl's design.

I haven't had my sapphire made into a ring yet but if I do I think it will be yellow gold. I am guessing that with the OP having inherited an old ring, it will be yellow gold too. I know it's not the conventional choice and Neverdespairgirl's ring is very beautiful but for me I like the uniqueness and contrast of the yellow gold against the blueness of the stone. The yellow and the blue do almost clash with each other but I like the quirkiness of that and with gemstones I think you can get away with it. That said, I won't be wearing mine every day, so perhaps I can be a bit more bold.

Having had a "discussion" over this topic with a group of fairly inebriated 20 something girls the other day the overwhelming majority thought it more romantic to be proposed to with the ring as chosen by your prospective fiance than to be proposed to and then go and buy the ring together.

I'd have loathed it - so would my female mates. Maybe we're just a bolshie lot (-:

I'd much rather choose my own ring too. After all it will be me who will be wearing it for the duration of our engagement and marriage.

Of equal importance, what is she getting you to mark the occasion?

    Huh?......

    That's gorgeous.

Thank you. I'm very fond of it myself, and designing it together, and choosing the sapphire, was lovely.

I think gold and sapphires look lovely together - I'm just not very keen on gold on me, it doesn't suit me. I have very pale skin, and fair hair.

I was bought a new bike instead of an engagement ring. We had a lot of fun choosing it together, deciding on the mud-guards, panniers etc. Very romantic.

I think I must be one of women you don't understand! Nearly forty years ago when my husband and I got engaged we simply had no money for an engagement ring.

He was a research student I was a nurse and we were very poor, but, we managed without an engagement ring. I have never since those days felt the need for my husband to buy me a ring either with or without diamonds! It is just a symbol and not needed by me.

So all this says is we are all different, want and need different things from our partners.

I totally agree i never had an engagement ring i do not know what the hype is all about in spending tons on the ring, when after you get married and have a family you need the money more.

When my mum died i had her engagement ring and if anyone asks this is mine. I personally think it is waste of money spending thousands on a ring.

And I am talking from a womens point of view here too.
