Thanks for all replys appreciate any response
I love sapphires and my lovely husband bought me one last year. £390 might be a reasonable price but it could be a .4 of a carat perfect blue Ceylon sapphire or a 4 carat lab manufactured sapphire.
I would do your research, don't just let a middle man source it for you without telling him exactly what you want. I believe mine came from a guy who sources natural, ethically sound gemstones. Do your research and I'm sure you'll find something lovely.0 -

With 50% of marriages ending in divorce, a lot of people have many more than 1 engagement ring! That also doesn't include all the engagements that never make it down the isle.....
My first set were nothing special as we were poor when we got engaged. We had been through more as a couple at that point than most people face in a lifetime, and so me the £££ value of a ring was not important.
I have since upgraded because we had the money to waste and I also found a set I really liked.14th October 201020th October 20113rd December 20130 -
We used Samara James (website), which was very reasonable, but that was a good few years ago...0

OH bought me a £299 ring, which a lot of people have said is 'cheap'. I honestly don't know, or care, what's normal to spend on an engagement ring. Our wedding rings total £120 for two.
As you can see even in this thread there are varying opinions, but you know your partner better than anyone. OH knew that I'd have been a little upset if he'd have spent much more on the ring, and whilst diamond is nice if he'd have proposed with a CZ ring I would have been fine with that. I'm marrying him, not a circular piece of metal and a stone.0 -
I have a gorgeous second hand ring. We set a budget and that was how I got the best value for money and it was the ring I liked the best. Saving for a home, wedding and children was more important than a ring anyway.
For our wedding rings we are making our own. We are making a weekend of it and it looks like such a fun day. I am so excited!0 -
I think I must be one of women you don't understand! Nearly forty years ago when my husband and I got engaged we simply had no money for an engagement ring.
He was a research student I was a nurse and we were very poor, but, we managed without an engagement ring. I have never since those days felt the need for my husband to buy me a ring either with or without diamonds! It is just a symbol and not needed by me.
So all this says is we are all different, want and need different things from our partners.0 -

Of course, but at the time surely all women think it will be the only (if its the first one that they have received that is, if not then it will be the last!) engagement ring that they will get, so it should be important0 -

I have got an old ring that was given too her great great grandma for there ruby anniversary and the ruby is missing so I was thinking of getting it re sized, polished and the stone replacing with a sapphire as its her birthstone but I had the problem of choosing what type of sapphire and was quoted £390 for a light blue sapphire, does anyone think this is a reasonable price?

I think that sounds lovely0 -
Gems TV channel 43 on freeview, you can't beat their prices or sometimes bid tvI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

Is it me?
I thought getting engaged was more about expressing your love and intent to the lady you love? Surely its a little bit more romantic to visit a jeweller together, enjoy the experience of choosing the ring or design?
I appreciate that budget plays a factor in peoples decisions naturally but its a bit more special than buying the latest smartphone or tablet surely??
