As far as the homework is concerned, you have a couple of choices. Burning it is one of my favourites; we actually did it with DD2's mis-spelled Americanised nonsense that she was *told* to do. I calmly told the teacher concerned that the work was a waste of time and paper. When she said that DD still had to do it, I told her that we were short of kindling and it had received the treatment it deserved. Cue filthy looks at me, but not DD's fault and no sanctions. Alternatively you could do it for your DS [I hate typing this, but this is a far from normal situation] so he keeps out of trouble. ...Most of all, you sound like a great parent at a very trying time - in 8 days it will all be over :)

I was very amused by the sentence in bold - not least because a close friend of mine used to do this for her children when they were in primary school, because she didn't believe kids that age having homework.
I taught her son and only found out years later that his mum had done all his homework!
The interesting element of this story is that at the time, the mum was the deputy head at her kids' school.
She is now a headteacher and still doesn't believe in primary school kids doing homework...and both her children passed the 11 + and went to grammar schools.

OP, I feel so angry with your child's school - please make sure you don't lie down for their bullying behaviour. And make sure you say the magic words:
I am seriously considering making a formal complaint. (Then do it!)

Holding 'booster' classes is against the principle of SATs as originally set up , anyway.

Ever tried to teach level 6 in a class where there are levels 1,2,3,4 and 5 working? ;) Booster classes would be the only way it would be possible really.

Flipping Gove putting this level 6 paper in primary school. Wonder what score he'd get if he sat it?

Why not make it a game and get your DS to answer the paper in the most ludicrous manner possible?

My brother was forced to sit his standard grade French writing exam (not compulsory and wouldn't have affected his grade) so he wrote the essay in JRR Tolkeins elvish!

Alternatively you could do it for your DS [I hate typing this, but this is a far from normal situation] so he keeps out of trouble. My other favourite is to complete it in Latin [some splendid stuff on Apple's Pages products] or utterly wrongly: e.g. "Write a page about something that made you happy" had us writing a whole lot of random and completely irrelevant things like an analysis of a piece of music [my area of expertise & one the teacher knew nothing about] or a shopping list. Oh the fun I had last year! Now I work in their school, I have to behave - but then, the homework is largely relevant and appropriate so I have few issues.

If you really really want to make trouble, feel free to PM me, but there are a number of avenues open to you to make life very difficult for the teacher and Head. Most of all, you sound like a great parent at a very trying time - in 8 days it will all be over :)

Thanks for this, there's some great ideas here that i'll try out this weekend:) we've been winding the teacher up for a long time now, just because he won't lay off the homework issue, DS wrote the words brown elephant randomly just to see if the teacher was actually reading his work, the teacher ticked it. DS called his bluff on parents evening, one very red faced teacher:rotfl:

Unfortunately those magic words mean very little to the school he attends. I've written numerous letters, got higher people involved, they buck their ideas up for a short while then they're strait back on him.

Luckily today was the last of the booster classes, and DS was not aloud to attend because he was made to sit his mock SAT test. But in fairness it was level 5 and he was happy to do it, so alls well. Friday however is mock level 6 he's dreading it, so we'll see:(

I got stuck on question 1. :o Maths was never my strong point. I got a CSE 2 twice!

How long has level 6 been in? Son never did it, he's in current yr 8. Thinking about it none of his particular form in his Secondary school did it or achieved it either. When we went to Secondary school parents evening prior to them moving up, his form teacher had left the class list out with the puils details, which included what grade they had achieved in SATS and there were mainly 4s with a few 3s and 5s.

May 2012 was 1st year schools could opt in to this test at KS2. Previously flirted with in 2002, but Labour scrapped them as they were "too hard".

Thanks for posting the test , cool , I did not do some of the questions. :DAlthough there are others that are ridiculously easy, like "is 1/4 one third of 3/12 "
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

Crikey it's a bit hard isn't it! I'd be stuck on the 'explain how you know' bits. I didn't try all of it, just glanced through.

I've got sixth formers who will get a B or A who would have to think about that one. Plenty lower down would get it wrong. There's something about fractions that some kids never quite get, I think.

OP, in my school, we ignore the SATS results completely. We set somewhat haphazardly but move kids every half term as we see fit so there is flexibility. We use MIDYIS for their 'target' grade but it's never really discussed with them (at least, not by me). Why not contact your preferred secondary school and ask them? (Apologies if this has already been suggested, I haven't read every post).

I enjoyed doing that test! Made me think a little bit, but none of it was that hard. Not sure my workings would be the same way they are taught these days, but fun to do while OH was in the pub last night.

I just reread what I wrote there, how sad am I!

To OP, I would have pulled my child by now, to make you son ill and suggest he takes more medication is outrageous. Can you complain to the governors and the LEA?
