but if someone comes to you 'recommended' how are you to know otherwise? It's all a bit of a lottery if you ask me.

He did say that it was 'a blessing in disguise' as he had another job to finish off (there had been something unforseen which needs a bit more work).
Blessing in disguise my rear end. In other words he's overrun on the first job and needs to get it finished in order to get paid and its a bigger job than yours and he promised he would be there later today to get on with it. But then again I'm just cynical - and no it's NOT an excuse I would use before some bright spark from the usual array of suspects suggests it.

    Cheers

Dont get me wrong he's probably a good tiler but its sounds like taking advantage of a situation to dig himself out of another hole to me. But my previous post is all pure unadulterated speculation with zero proof - so don't take too much notice. However, I think if he was in that position it would be better if he was up front with you, called and politely said I've overrun my current job would it inconvenience you too much if we delayed a day or so.

    Cheers

  • idisagree with what people are saying here. If the old tiles have taken the plaster off with it the wall will need bonding and if he hasnt got time to do it a plasterer will be needed

Sorry but I'm not sure why you are disagreeing because:

and he said two or three times it was only a skimming job.

If that's really all it is then there's absolutely no reason why he can't sort it out with some rapidset

And yes I know you've used the if word too. Its the "coming off in lumps" expression clouding the issue because that hasn't been quantified and of course,

Care to post up some pics for a better judgement?
would help immensely in knowing what is going on.

    Cheers.

Hi again. I don't have a phone with a camera (and wouldn't know how to provide pics on a forum in any case. I'm almost 60 and a technophobe). In the meantime, I'll just have to describe the situation.

The tiles are 6" x 6" and one or two have been removed by levering with a metal bar (not a hammer and chisel). The plaster was stuck to the back of the tile, and this was because the tiles were 'buttered' with adhesive rather than the comb lines you usually see. Now, you can see rough and uneven pink plaster (certainly not brickwork). It looks like the smooth coating has been removed.

I'll ask my husband to do some pics at the weekend. I have to say he was massively disappointed last night, after getting in from work, dead tired and the job not done -- or even a solution on the horizon. His thought was that tilers must surely come across this all the time - not everyone lives in a brand new house with fresh plaster, and so there must be products out there to sort a small area of splashback without resorting a full replaster job? And the headache of finding a plasterer available!

Sorry to moan. You lot are really helpful and it clears my head just talking about this.:o

Brute force and ignorance will inevitably remove the plaster finish coat irrespective of whether the tiles were back buttered or the addy applied to the wall.
It looks like the smooth coating has been removed.
In that case the wall could have been made good by the tiler as previously suggested without needing a plasterer to skim first.

    He's right.

So two days down the track are you any further forward?

    Cheers

Hopefully yes, keystone. A tiler is coming on Tuesday.

I've explained the problem to him and he said he thinks he can sort it for us, it's not a unique situation and he's been in the business for nearly 30 years. So keep your fingers crossed for us!!

So are you saying you have a different tiler?

The problem isn't unique as we have tried to say, tilers are used to this and can cope, if you found 1 that couldn't, then that is very unlucky, black ball him.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

yes, it's a different tiler coming to assess and quote for the work.

I have used him before but it was 15 years ago and had lost his name and phone number. Was given it again by a local tile shop.
