Tiles are pulling plaster off the walls

My kitchen was due to be re-tiled today but when the tiler started to pull off the old tiles, plaster dropped off in lumps. he of course is unable to tile onto a bumpy wall so he's trying to get a plasterer mate to come round and skim tomorrow morning.
No cost has been discussed, and he said it was partly his fault for not lifting a tile previously to check that they 'popped off.' However, I think we will be stuck with further expense and I wondered if anyone knew roughly how much it would cost to do 3sq metres of skimming? Tiler thought it was a 2 hour job.

i dont think anybody will be able to really give you a price for the job...except perhaps the plasterer himself.
It will really depend on several factors....how friendly he is with his mate the tiler, whether he has another job to go to after or before hes plasterer your kitchen and how long the job actually takes.
I've had lots of dealings with plasterers over the past year and all have been really different in both approach to work and pricing ...and in honesty its finding the one your comfortable with.
I never found a plasterer who worked on an hourly rate and the closest i probably got was one who did 2 small sections of rendering to tidy up a previous job and charged £100 for a couple of hours work.
ideally plasterers like to work on a daily rate.which will vary in my experience from £125 per day to up to £200 for the one we had to employ quickly....then you have to factor in materials...which usually isnt a great amount.
So based on your limited description the fact that its probably going to be classed as half a days work...you would probably expect to pay between £70 -£150 for the job...but as i said if its being done at mates rates then it could be less...frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0 -
Sounds more than just a skim to me if its bad enough that he cant tile over it.0

If plaster is coming away with the tiles, it wont be a simple skimming job, it will be a proper plastering job.
Ask him how much before he starts.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
just hack the plaster off with the tiles & dry line it if it's all gonna be tiled, it will save the cost of getting it plastered (a couple of sheets of plasterboard & a bag of dry wall addy) & if you know what you are doing you could do it yourself or if not the tiler should be able to do itI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Sorry chaps, I'm a 'laydee' and definately don't know what I'm doing. I have to rely on the tiler's experience, skill and goodwill.
It's only the splashback area and he said two or three times it was only a skimming job.0 -
If that's really all it is then there's absolutely no reason why he can't sort it out with some rapidset himself - let that go off and tile straight over it. Whole job done in a day. It doesn't have to be nicely skimmed and if it is then you still have to wait for the skim to dry before he can tile. His approach is adding a couple of days elapsed time to the job. Can't understand it frankly.
Care to post up some pics for a better judgement?
Cheers. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits. - Einstein0 -
He did say that it was 'a blessing in disguise' as he had another job to finish off (there had been something unforseen which needs a bit more work).0

I was about to suggest the same, it's a poor tiler that hasn't come across that before and have the skill to fix it, to be honest they should pull the skim coat off if applied correctly.
I'd skim it with fast set tile addy scrape it and tile over, but then I'm only a skinflinting amateur:D:D
Poor tiler choice bottom line, sorry.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Assuming that is not a 'laydee' in the Little Britain sense -- there is no reason why women can't do these things. However, I'd post pictures, and let the trades here comment.
