Can I install and water meter without permission from my landlord?

I have asked him and he said no because families wouldn't want to rent it if it had a meter as and when we move.0

Not all families! I have 3 children and we have a water meter, we pay significantly less with a meter than we would without. I think the water rates charge for our house would be £450 p/a and we pay about £300 p/a on a meter.
The problem is that people still do not always realise that a meter can be beneficial, they just see "water meter" and think that it is a bad thing - as did I when we bought this house and the previous owner had had a water meter.
Could you get some figures from Dwr Cymru website as to "average" uses to show your landlord? E.g if a family with 2/3 children moved in, what would Dwr Cymru expect their metered charges to be? If it is still less than the non rated charge, he might change his mind?
Btw, we are not stingy with water, but it does make you think a bit about how much you use - no bad thing, in my opinion! Just waiting for our June bill to see how much we will be paying for the next 12 months...0 -

Well that's what I thought. We seem to be on quite a high rate and i'm pretty sure a family wouldn't spend as much on a meter as without. You'd only fit a family of 2 adults and 2 children in our house unless you really wanted to cram them in! We currently pay £46 per month without a meter and I reckon we could knock £20 a month off that with just the 2 of us. But would a family average use more??!
I can't seem to find an "averages" on the Dwr Cymru website!0 -
I can't seem to find an "averages" on the Dwr Cymru website!
The average UK consumption is 50 to 55 cubic metres, per person per year. Although many people say they can use much less.
You can work that cost out on the website.
Don't forget in your comparison that the £46 monthly you pay might not be for all 12 months in the year - some companies take 10 payments, others 8 or 9.
The bottom line is you can ask for a meter. However you might upset the landlord - your decision!!0
