Internet Access by Wi-Fi From Ethernet?

I'm shortly going to be staying in a property that offers internet access via ethernet (the connection comes in by cable to an ethernet socket from an adjacent property). This is obviously fine for a laptop, but I'd like to be able to hook up my phone as well without using the rather patchy 3G available there.
Is there a way of creating wi-fi access from this (I won't, as far as I can tell, have access to the router set up in the adjoining property)?
Can I take a spare router and create a wireless access point from this? If so, what do I need please?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You should be able to easily configure a wireless router as an access point e.g. here

The software linked to V1.0 and V.09 (previous version) are flaky at the best of times, and won't always repeat a cable to wireless connection. There is another called Connectify which will but its chargeable . Or get a cheap 'cable' router, will work fine and the PC / laptop won't need to be switched on.

Working on the basis that your username is an indication that you're a mac user, I can highly recommend the Apple Time Capsule, which will do the job perfectly (as well as backup, which is always useful!).

Cheaper, and still easy, solution would be a simple access point - any should do, and no router access is needed.

something like this, in AP config, will do as you want... might even get something a couple of quid cheaper on ebuyer or similar. Ethernet plugs into this, then you just set up the wifi on it via the GUI. Job done, use one myself in a particular office for exactly that purpose :)

Linux works fine with a Wired connection to a Wifi Hotspot ... well it does from Fedora ... but until I can go Wired I can't check other flavours (I am using wireless at the mo so it will disconnect me from my Wireless connection) But nifty digits link worked OK on my W7 setup too ....

As will an Airport Express, which is rather cheaper.
